Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup: Shehzad Belligerent Knock Maintains Lions' Unbeaten Record

Ahmed Shehzad's 78 off 49 deliveries ensured that the Lahore Lions made it to the semi finals of the Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup unbeaten as they defeated Hyderabad Hawks by 8 runs in their final league game.

Shehzad smashed 3 sixes and 8 boundaries and his dominant innings was enough for the Lions to post a match winning 160-9 in 20 overs.

The T20 tournament is now in the knock out stages with the Lions taking on the Rams, and the Stallions taking on the Dolphins in the semi finals to be played tomorrow.

This sets up a potential mouth watering final between the Lahore Lions and the Karachi Dolphins on Friday.

Shahid Afridi's Unmatchable Cricket Records & Feats

So I have just followed Shahid Afridi's performance for Hampshire in the Friends Life T20 Cup in England, and it seems like he has been leading them to some impressive victories.

First a 5 wicket haul to destroy Gloucestershire and then a belligerent 29 off 17 and 3-10 to roll over Sussex and lead Hampshire to the top of the table.

Not bad!

I don't see why anyone would be surprised considering the number of match winning performances Shahid Afridi has come up with in Pakistan colours.

There are a number of people that have doubted Afridi's abilities at the international level. Many who never thought he was capable of being Pakistan captain. And many who thought it was a good move to remove him as ODI & T20 captain. Many feel he didn't deserve to play international cricket.

This post is for all those Shahid Afridi critics (and one for all his fans to enjoy) to show what he has achieved over his glittering 15 year career for Pakistan.

1. He wasn't fast just once, he's always fast
I am sure you are aware that Afridi holds the record for the fastest ever ODI century. Its not only that, but Afridi has scored 3 out of the 10 fastest 100s ever scored in ODIs. Jayasuriya is the only other batsman whose name appears more than once in this top 10.

That's not all.

Afridi has scored a 50 in 22 deliveries or less as many as 7 times in ODI cricket! That is more times than any other batsman.

2. It rains sixes when Afridi bats
Yes he has hit more sixes than any other batsman in ODI cricket, but that is not all. He has hit 7 sixes or more in an ODI innings 5 times. No other batsman appears more than thrice in that list, which includes names like Sanath Jayasuriya, Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Shane Watson, Yuvraj Singh, Abdul Razzaq, Saurav Ganguly, Viv Richards, and all other regular six hitters that you can think of.

3. Bowl him 6 balls, and he'll hit you for plenty
36 is the answer and Herchelle Gibbs is the only one who has done it in an ODI, and Yuvraj Singh in a T20I, but no one has scored heavily off 6 deliveries as regularly as Afridi has. He has scored more than 25 runs in an over in an ODI on 4 different occasions.

4. He strikes it at a rate of knots
Afridi doesn't hold the record for the highest career strike rate in ODIs any more, but he has the highest career strike rate in ODIs for batsmen that have score more than 600 career runs. Not only that, but Afridi has played a whopping 16 ODI innings, in which he has managed a strike rate above 200! That is more than what any other batsman has managed. The next best in the list is his compatriot Abdul Razzaq who has managed the feat 7 times.

5. He's done it from a very young age
Afridi holds the record of being the youngest ever ODI batsman to score a century. He was only 16 when he scored the fastest ever ODI century.

6. He is up there with the best Pakistani batsmen ever
Only Inzamam Ul Haq, Mohammad Yousuf, Saeed Anwar, Javed Miandad, and Saleem Malik have scored more ODI runs for Pakistan than Afridi has.

7. He does it with the ball too
Afridi is the 10th highest wicket taker of all time in ODI cricket. Only Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis have taken more wickets in ODIs for Pakistan than Afridi has! Now that is saying something considering the high quality of bowlers that Pakistan has produced over the years.

8. And you say he is not a quality spinner...
More wickets than Saqlain Mushtaq, Mushtaq Ahmed, and Abdul Qadir for Pakistan in ODIs. Muralitharan, Anil Kumble, and Sanath Jayasuriya are the only spinners who have taken more ODI wickets than Afridi has. Yes, Afridi has more ODI wickets than Shane Warne!

9. He gets them out consistently
Afridi is in a very elite company of bowlers who have taken 5 or more 5-wicket hauls in ODI cricket. He has done it 5 times, and only Wasim, Waqar, and Saqlain have done it more times for Pakistan.

10. And you say he is not consistent as a bowler
Afridi has achieved the feat of taking 4 wickets or more in an ODI in 3 consecutive games. That is as many as the best of them have.

11. He bowls them over a lot
Only 6 other bowlers have got their wickets out bowled more times than Afridi has. He sits 7th on the list, joint with the one who is regarded th greatest of them all - Glenn McGrath!

12. Very few have won games for Pakistan as many times as he has
Shahid Afridi has won the man of the match award for Pakistan in ODIs as many as 24 times! That is the same number of times as Inzamam has. Only Saeed Anwar has managed it more times for Pakistan - 28. That is more man of the match awards than Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Imran Khan, Javed Miandad and the many other match winners that Pakistan has produced!

13. He catches them too
Only Inzamam and Younis Khan have caught more catches for Pakistan than Afridi has.

14. No one has been as dominant as he has with the ball for Pakistan
The 21 wickets that Shahid Afridi took in the ICC World Cup 2011 is the most that any Pakistani has taken in a single series. Only Waqar Younis has equalled the feat. That is also the most wickets any Pakistani has taken in a World Cup.

15. He's among the best allrounders in the world
Besides Sanath Jayasuriya, no one else besides Shahid Afridi has score more than 6,000 ODI runs and taken more than 300 ODI wickets. He is also among the few allrounders who have scored a 50 and taken 5 wickets in the same ODI.

16. He does it in T20 cricket as well
How many times have you heard that T20 cricket is not for the bowlers? Shahid Afridi is the highest wicket taker in T20Is. He also holds the record for the best bowling figures in a T20I by a captain. Only Umar Gul has taken 4 or more wickets in a T20I more times than Afridi has.

17. No one wins more T20 games for their country than he does
Afridi has won the man of the match award in a T20I 6 times, which is more than any other cricketer in the world.

18. His bat also talks in T20Is
Afridi has scored 50+ in a T20I in 3 consecutive games. Only Brendon McCullum has done it more times (4).

I might have missed a number of other Shahid Afridi records and feats in limited overs cricket, but this is quite a comprehensive list to quiet down all the critics that he has.

You still think that he is not a match winner? That he doesn't deserve to play for Pakistan? That he doesn't deserve to captain Pakistan in ODIs and T20Is?

Well Pitched has always regarded Afridi as Pakistan's most valuable player, but even I wasn't aware at how much Afridi has achieved during his cricket career for Pakistan.

This should be an eye opener for everyone.

I sincerely hope that he doesn't miss any international cricket for Pakistan and continues to achieve more than he already has on the cricket field.

Not only for Hampshire and other domestic sides in Australia and Sri Lanka, but also for Pakistan.

Keep going Boom Boom!

Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup: Shahzaib, Latif take Dolphins to the Semis

The Karachi Dolphins demolished the Faisalabad Wolves today by a whopping 124 runs to become the first team to qualify for the Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup Semi Finals.

The Dolphins' posted a daunting total of 231-7 in 20 overs with Shahzaib Hasan ripping the heart out of the Wolves' bowling with a whirlwind knock of 69 off only 28 deliveries. Shahzaib's innings included 4 sizes and 8 boundaries, and he was involved in a 90 run opening partnership with Asad Shafiq (27 off 22) in a mere 6.4 overs.

Khalid Latif then took up the charge from where Shahzaib left as he smashed 46 runs off 26 deliveries with the help of 5 sixes and a boundary.

Late lusty blows from Sarfraz Ahmed and Mohammad Sami ensured that the Dolphins reached well beyond 200, a total that proved too much for the Wolves.

None of the Wolves' batsmen could post a significant score and they folded for 107 in only 13.3overs.

Pakistan discard Sohail Khan was the pick of the bowlers for the Dolphins picking up 3-32 including the prized scalp of Pakistan skipper Misbah Ul Haq.

The Dolphins ended the league stage at the top of Group B and now await the results of Group A tomorrow to see who they face in the semi finals.

Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup: Sharjeel Khan Continues to Impress

21 year old opener, Sharjeel Khan, from Hyderabad continues his impressive form in the Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup today with another whirlwind knock, albeit in a losing cause.

Sharjeel, who had smashed 61 runs off 33 deliveries against the Leopards two days ago, gave the Hawks another flying start today with a brutal knock of 74 runs of a mere 41 deliveries. Sharjeel's innings included 6 sixes and 5 boundaries.

No other Hawks' batsman could contribute substantially resulting in the Stallions notching up their first victory in the tournament with a 33 run win.

The Stallions scored 183 off their 20 overs with decent contributions from Imran Nazir (20), Shoaib Malik (39), Mansoor Amjad (39), and Shahid Yousuf (48).

The Hawks were bowled out for 150.

Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup: 19 Year Old Multan Boy, Zain Abbas, Rocks the Dolphins

Youngsters continue to shine in the on going Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup, with yet another power packed performance by Zain Abbas in Multan Tigers' upset win over the Karachi Dolphins today.

Zain, who made his T20 debut two days ago in the Tigers' game against the Wolves, smashed an international calibre attack for an impressive 85 runs off 65 deliveries, leading the Tigers to a match winning total of 161 off 20 overs.

The Dolphins, whose pace attack included internationals Tanvir Ahmed, Mohammad Sami, and Sohail Khan had no answer to Zain's attack as his onslaught comprised of 3 sixes and 10 hits to the fence.

Zain score more than half the Tigers runs, which proved to be more than enough for a 14 run win.

Despite their batting line up including a number of internationals such as Shahzaib Hasan, Khalid Latif, Asad Shafiq, and Fawad Alam, the Dolphins could not over haul the Tigers score.

Zain, who has so far opened in all his domestic innings, made his first class debut this season for Baluchistan and has so far impressed with two half centuries in 4 innings.

His List A performance has been even more impressive with a century and 3 half centuries in 5 innings.

Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup: Pakistan Internationals Lead the Lions' Demolition of the Stallions

Pakistan's former openers shone on the 2nd day of the Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup in Faisalabad today in a high scoring match between the Lahore Lions and Sialkot Stallions.

Batting first, the Lahore Lions reached a daunting score of 218 in their allotted 20 overs with openers Ahmed Shehzad and Nasir Jamshed involved in a 128 run partnership in only 10.1 overs.

Shehzad dominated the Stallions throughout his innings scoring 74 off 47 deliveries with 2 sixes and 11 boundaries. Nasir was just as brutal smashing 55 off only 27 deliveries with 3 sixes and 5 fours.

Following the scathing attack by Shehzad and Nasir, Umar Akmal took charge with an unbeaten knock of 43 off 23 deliveries with 2 sixes and 4 fours.

The Lions captain, Mohammad Yousuf could manage only 13, despite a six and a four in his innings.

The target of 219 was too much for the Stallions, even though their opener Imran Nazir gave them a flying start with smashing innings of 44 that included 5 sixes!

The other big names in the Stallions - Shoaib Malik, Shahid Yousuf, and Shehzad Malik - could not manage much with the bat. Only a face saving innings of 67 from former U-19 player Ali Khan enabled the Stallions to reach 173 in 20 overs.

Ali's innings included 6 sixes, which was another strong performance from a young player looking to break into the senior team.

Ali has been around the domestic scene for 4 years now and has an impressive record in List A and T20 games. He has also been a part of a successful Pakistan U-19 team in the past.

Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup: Another Youngster, Sharjeel Khan lead Hawks to Thrilling Victory

After the impressive performances of Asif Ali and Hasan Mahmood on the opening day of the Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup, another youngster, Sharjeel Khan from Hyderabad, impressed the selectors today with a whirlwind knock of 61 from 33 deliveries that led the Hyderabad Hawks to a 3 wicket victory over the Islamabad Leopards.

The 21 year old opener smashed 5 sixes and 5 fours to give the Hawks a flying start that set the platform for their win.

Sharjeel made his First Class debut for Hyderabad in 2009 and in 19 first class games has already notched up 4 centuries in addition to 2 centuries in 12 List A games.

Batting first, the Leopards scored 164 before they were bowled out in the final over of their innings. The Hawks reached their target with 5 balls to spare.

Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup: Youngsters Shine on Debut in Wolves win over Tigers

The Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup got underway today in Faisalabad with the home team Faisalabad Wolves taking on the Multan Tigers in the first game of the tournament.

The match was an easy win for the Wolves who marched to victory by 69 runs on the back of two power packed performances by Asif Ali and Hasan Mahmood.

Asif Ali is a 19 year old right hand batsman who made his first class debut for Faisalabad just last December. He has played only 3 first class matches and 5 List A games; while today was his first ever T20 game.

Asif could not have asked for a better start to his T20 career.

He walked out to the crease on the 2nd ball of the match, after Abdur Rauf removed Pakistan international Mohammad Hafeez on the 1st ball of the innings.

Asif did not look back after that. With the held of 7 sixes and 9 boundaries, Asif Ali scored an exact 100 off a mere 59 deliveries, helping the Wolves to a total of 199 in 20 overs.

Pakistan captain Misbah also played some powerful strokes in his unbeaten 32 off 21 deliveries.

In response, the Tigers could only manage 130 as Hasan Mahmood, the 20 year old left arm spinner destroyed their middle order with 5 wickets. Hasan ended the game with figures of 5-23.

Like Asif, Hasan was also playing his first ever T20 game.

Hasan has had an impactful domestic season for Faisalabad this year with two 5 wicket hauls in first class games, and one in a List A game.

Mohsin Khan had said that he would be closely following players performances during the Faysal Bank T20 Cup; Asif and Hasan could not have chosen a better platform to display their prowess with bat and ball respectively.

How Strong is Shahid Afridi's Political Clout?

This question came to my mind when I read about the settlement that Shahid Afridi and the PCB have come to.

Rs. 4.5 million in exchange for an NOC to play for Hampshire in the Friends Life T20 in England.

Not a bad deal I think.

I don't know the worth of Afridi's Hampshire contract, but anything above £32,000 means that Afridi will make a profit at the end of his stint. Hampshire have still got 10 league games to play in the tournament and more depending on how far they qualify. Surely he will make a lot more than £32,000.

What caught my attention the most, however, was the speed with which the settlement was reached.

Sure Afridi left no stone unturned and even reached out to the President's 21 year old son in London. For what exactly, I am not sure but I guess Bilawal Bhutto has some influence over the Pakistan president, who also happens to be the Patron of the PCB.

I think Afridi beat Ijaz Butt at his own game. The one thing Ijaz Butt has had going for him is the support of the Pakistan president.

And Afridi just showed that he's got more of that support.

Younis Khan fought endlessly and silently against the PCB for 10 long months before returning to the team.

Mohammad Yousuf has tussled with the PCB and left the team and returned so many times that I have lost count.

Shoaib Malik's and Danish Kaneria's issues with the PCB are still pending and both players continue to miss out on international duty.

Zulqarnain Haider is another player whose case has been going on forever.

On top, Mohammad Ilyas, the selector who got involved in the Afridi vs PCB war, remains suspended.

And on the other side we have Afridi who refuses to apologise, refuses to play international cricket under the current board and management, yet he got what he wanted - the permission to play for Hampshire.

It cost him Rs. 4.5 million but still he managed to garner support from political figures, as well as, the general public - something that many of his peers could not manage.

So how much political clout does Shahid Afridi really have?

Sure the case with the PCB will continue into the longer term, but with a view on short term gains, Afridi has definitely walked out with the upper hand.

Player ho to aisa!
