Victoria has been set up for a big chase in the JLT final

Victoria is Chasing 345 after Blitz by South Australia

The Redbacks plundered 117 off of the last eight overs, setting Victoria up for a big chase in the JLT elimination final. A century from Jake Weatherald and some brutal blows later on from Tom Cooper assisted the South Australians in setting a sizable total for Victoria to pursue in the One-Day Cup in Hobart.

After being sent to bat, the Redbacks managed to reach 5 for 339 at the Bellerive Oval from a diminished 48-over innings that was cut short by a brief delay due to rain.

Victoria Boosted by Internationals’ Return

Victoria, improved by the return of internationals Dan Christian, Aaron Finch, and Glenn Maxwell, have to chase a total of 345 off of 48 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in order to earn a place in the final on Saturday against the Western Australians at the same grounds.

Weatherald Crashes Vital Elimination Final Ton

Weatherald, who was dropped early on, went on to score 116 off of 121 balls, and shared a partnership of 215 runs with Alex Carey, the Ashes hopeful, for the first wicket. This player proved once again why he so strongly features in the kind of online sports betting guide offered by various internet-based bookmakers.

Carey fell excruciatingly short of a maiden one-day ton, and edged Scott Boland, placeman, behind for 92. Cooper then managed to smash a half-century off of 22 balls, making for the equal third-fastest in the history of one-day cricket, before he got holed out for 59.

Cooper Set the Vics Ablaze with a Record-Equalling 50

The South Australians managed to smash 117 off of the last 48 balls of their innings with Travis Head and Alex Ross pinching with strong cameos. Head managed 29 of 16 balls, and Ross 18 off of 6. Boland was the only bowler for the Victorians to go at less than a-run-a-ball, with 1 for 51 off of 10 overs.

The Redbacks Go Crazy in Death Overs

Victoria won the toss earlier on, and chose to bowl first as they were welcoming back an array of international talent that had performed well in training. Travis  Head, Adam Zampa, and Kane Richardson returned from foreign duty, having been on the Australian limited-overs tour in India.

The return of these star players means that Victoria has entered the final without Blake Thomson, Will Sutherland, and Seb Gotch from their last start, a contentious DLS victory against New South Wales at the North Sydney Oval that was deserted due to a dangerous pitch 26 overs into the game’s second innings.

South Australia made the difficult decision to drop Jake Lehmann for Head, with coach Darren Lehmann’s son scoring 179 runs at 35 in the competition. Dan Worrall has made a surprising return to the game after limping off of the field with a knee issue in the win against the Western Australians. An MRI cleared him of damage, and so he will be taking his place in the XI today. Chadd Sayers has been shunted out of the starting XI for Richardson’s return, and Zampa replaces Tom Andrews.P

Which IPL Team will bag Shahid Afridi?

Even before wondering that, shouldn't one wonder whether an IPL team even wants Shahid Afridi or not.

He had a terrible season playing for the Deccan Chargers in 2008.

He publicly denounced his captain, VVS Laxman, after the season was over.

There were rumours that he didn't act professionally and missed several training sessions.

So then, why would an IPL team want Shahid Afridi?

Why not I ask.

Afridi helped Pakistan win the World T20 earlier this year.

He was man of the match in both the semi final and final of the World T20.

He has rediscovered his batting form, at least in the T20 version of the game; he recently became one of the few batsmen to hit 3 consecutive 50s in T20 internationals.

He took over the captaincy of the Pakistan T20 team and hasn't lost a game as captain yet.

He is at the top of his bowling form and is still the 2nd highest wicket taker in all T20 internationals.

Moreover, he is playing for South Australia in the T20 Big Bash down under and has delivered 2 consecutive man of the match performances helping SA beat Western Australia and Queensland.

If that is not a T20 match winner, than what is?

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Shahid Afridi will be the most sought after player in the IPL auction set to take place before the 3rd season of the league kicks off this year.

Or rather, should be!

He is in the list of 97 players to be auction, which was released yesterday.

IPL teams, start budgeting for the Boom Boom!

Shahid Afridi to Play in Australia

That could happen if an approach by New South Wales is materialized.

Afridi has been approached by NSW to play for their T20 team, and possibly their Sheffield Shield team as well, next season.

After Younis Khan (South Australia), Umar Gul (Western Australia), and Sohail Tanvir (South Australia), Afridi will become the 4th Pakistani player in 2 years to represent an Australian domestic side if the deal goes through.

That is good news for the allrounder, who is probably still on a high after leading Pakistan to the World T20 title.

What's next?

A higher valued IPL contract?

Possibly.

The Deccan Chargers would be kicking their behinds for canceling his contract earlier this year. If he was still on their roster, he could have represented them at the Champions League.

Irrespective, the Chargers won, Afridi won, Pakistan won, so alls well that ends well!

Praise for Younis from South Australia

I couldn't help but do a 4th consecutive post on Younis Khan when a friend of mine emailed me about a comment that he read on cricinfo's ball-by-ball.

The comment was:

Kevin Johnson: "We Aussies love Khan. He played for our state SA and scored a century. He is a role model for us budding cricketers. Our club in Adeliade shows his videos as his style is perfect and we are so happy that he made captain. Our best wishes are with him and his team."

Thank you for the wishes Kevin Johnson.

I know Younis got a 70 odd for South Australia, but not sure about the century. Nevertheless, it always feels good to hear about good wishes for your country from around the world.

And South Australia shows videos of Younis Khan for their batsmen to emulate?

Wow! Maybe Pakistan should start doing that now.

Fiery Gul in Australia

Due to the New Year holidays I missed the progress of Umar Gul and Sohail Tanvir down under in the ongoing Twenty20 Big Bash.

But now, I am back, and am pleased to find that Gul has been in fiery form for Western Australia.

Last week he managed a 4 wicket haul in his first game for WA, and last night he managed 3-21 against Tasmania.

What's more, Gul even hit the winning runs of the only ball he faced in the game - a 4 of the penultimate delivery of the match leading WA to 2nd place in the points table.

Gul even held 3 catches in the match - wonder where he was fielding.

He didn't have that good a game in his 2nd match against New South Wales, where he went for 41 runs in his 4 overs.

On the other hand, Sohail Tanvir hasn't tasted the same success with South Australia losing to defending champions Victoria.

Victoria haven't lost many 20-20 games in Australia over the last 3-4 years. They have also won the competition 3 times on the trot prior to this one.

When South Australia managed 183, they may have smelled a chance with the best 20-20 bowler in the world in their ranks.

But Victoria showed why they are the best 20-20 side in Australia, if not the world.

Hodge, the leading 20-20 run scorer in the world and White, the captain with the most 20-20 wins creamed the SA bowling.

And they have an opener named Blizzard!

AC Blizzard !!!

What an amazing name you have there Aiden.

And apt for 20-20 cricket too.

Its only appropriate that a man with the name 'Blizzard' has a 20-20 strike rate of 177.95!

I forgot I was writing about Gul. Yep he's been fiery with the ball.

But AC Blizzard. Watch out for the future - the papers can have a field day with headlines.

Pakistanis Debut Down Under

The Twenty20 Big Bash, Australia's domestic 20-20 competition got underway a few days back.

Now normally I would not be covering an Australian domestic competition and would be relying on Jrod to hear about how Victoria is fairing, what David Hussey is doing, how Bryce McGain is shaping up, and the other happenings down under.

But this season has been quite different in Australia.

Different for us atleast.

As many as 3 Pakistani internationals have turned out for Australian states in their domestic competitions this season.

First Younis Khan played a few One-dayers and first class games for South Australia.

And now Umar Gul and Sohail Tanvir are playing for Western Australia and South Australia respectively in the Twenty20 Big Bash.

Both the Pakistanis went up against each other 2 days ago as WA took on SA.

Umar Gul even snared up Tanvir's wicket. First ball!

Gul made an impressive debut for his Australian state team picking up 4-15 in 3.2 overs.

His effort though could not help WA to victory who lost by the D/L method.

Tanvir picked up only 1 wicket nd had a forgetful debut with the bat.

I'll be following these 2 down under.

Elsewhere David Hussey continued business as usual smashing a 47 ball unbeaten 100. He even picked up 2 wickets.

Well he's not the future PM for nothing.

Who Was Younis Khan Missing?

After his century in the 3rd ODI agianst the West Indies in Abu Dhabi, Younis Khan instead of celebrating, took his gloves off, took a note out of his pocket, and showed it to the cameras.

MOTI in our language means fat woman. It can also be used in reference to male in humour.

So who was Younis missing?

His wife?

One of his South Australian team mates?

Mohammad Yousuf?

Finally Younis!

Younis Khan is not playing the on going Pentangular Cup in Pakistan as he is busy fulfilling his Australian commitment.

Earlier this year Younis Khan announced that he had been signed on by South Australia for a short stint with them in November-December this year.

My good friend at Cricket with Balls told me that South Australia was one of the weaker sides in the domestic competition down under and that anything that Younis would be able to bring to the side would be great for them.

Younis landed in Australia about a week ago, and though he didn't make an impression in his first outing in the Ford Ranger Cup (the ODI competition), South Australia did manage to sneak in a penultimate ball victory over New South Wales.

SA won by 4 wickets with a ball to spare chasing 261, but Younis was bowled by some Bird for only 3.

For a more descriptive account of that victory and Younis, see this.

Younis' next innings in Australia was also nothing to talk about as he was sent back to the dressing room of the first ball he faced on the 1st day of the Sheffield Shield game between SA and NSW.

He was caught behind off Thornely. Wasn't Thornely the wicket keeper?

On the final dat of the match, however, Younis Khan finally lived up to his reputation as he guided SA to a draw int he 4-day game.

Younis scored an unbeaten 71 as SA ended the final day on 300-5 after NSW had posted a mammoth 576 - 263 runs ahead of SA's 1st innings score.

Always good to see a Pakistani do well in Aussie land.

The Yo-Yos New Jobs

Mohammad Yousuf was a late signee for Lancashire this season as he was brought on board when Brad Hodge left for 5 weeks to join the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Yousuf was supposed to be there for only 5 weeks but got his contract extended as Hodge got called up for Australian duty in the Caribbean.

Yesterday Yousuf flew out of England to join the Pakistani squad to tour Bangladesh for the ODI series.

Though, not before scoring an unbeaten double century.

Mohammad Yousuf hit an unbeaten 205 in Lancashire's championship match against Yorkshire.

Lancashire had sent a request to the PCB for Yousuf's services for longer, however the PCB disallowed the request as they wanted to take a "full strength" squad to Bangladesh.

Yousuf should be back at Lancashire after the Tri Series / Asia Cup in a months time.

The PCB had faced some embarassment recently when Nasim Ashraf had announced that Younis Khan would be joining Western Australia for this season's Pura Cup, only for a WA official to come out and say that they had made no offer to Younis.

Later on it turned out that it was South Australia who had made the offer and Younis had accepted.

What I find funny though is that Cricinfo's headline reporting this news says "Younis Khan agrees to help out South Australia."

Now my friend over at Cricket with Balls tells me that South Australia has the weakest batting line up in Australian State Cricket.

Thats fine, but do they really expect Younis Khan to help them out?

Mark Sorell, the SA coach sure does.

But how?

Don't get me wrong, I think Younis is a great test batsman. He has played numerous match winning and match saving test innings. He averages almost 50 in tests and along with Inzamam and Yousuf had / has been the main stay of Pakistan's middle order for almost a decade now.

But Younis is an unorthodox batsman. He doesn't have a sound technique. He plays his shots away from his body. He drives of the back foot, he pulls with his feet off the ground, he plays cuts of the front foot, he plays reverse sweeps in test matches.

So how is this man going to help the South Australians?

One half of the Yo-Yos excelled in his new job, how will the other one do?
