Mustafizur Rahman - A Rare Exceptional Talent

Barring the final last night, I did not watch a single match of the IPL. I did follow the news and read up on the match results, which was enough evidence for me to realize that Mustafizur Rahman has been absolutely exceptional in the IPL.

With 17 wickets he ended the IPL as the 5th highest wicket taker; but what was most remarkable was his economy rate of 6.9, which was the best among all fast bowlers that bowled at least 10 overs in the tournament. The only bowler that bettered that economy rate was Adam Zampa with 6.76.

It is quite rare for a fast bowler from Bangladesh to be considered a global threat. There have been a number of spinners from Bangladesh that have shone in international cricket, but rarely a fast bowler.

Mustafizur Rahman however is a rare case. The boys is extremely good and arguably the best left arm pacer in the world today.

His international career is its nascent stages having played only 2 tests, 9 ODIs, and 13 T20Is. The numbers though that he has stacked up in his short career are commendable to say the least.

In 9 ODIs he has 26 wickets at an average of 12.34, a strike rate of 17.3 and an economy of 4.26.

In 13 T20Is he has 22 wickets at an average of 13.95, a strike rate of 14.0, and an economy of 5.98.

Boys his age dream of playing international cricket, let alone about achieving such a start to their international careers.

Mustafizur has been exceptional.

Those numbers suggest that if he can manage to remain fit, he will break a number of bowling records.

This is what those numbers mean right now:

Best Average ever in ODIs
Mustafizur has bowled 452 deliveries in ODIs and has picked up 26 wickets. For anyone who has bowled that many deliveries and picked up that many wickets, he has the BEST Average ever. No one even comes close to his 12.3. The next best averages among all bowlers that have bowled at least 450 deliveries or taken at least 25 wickets are 17.8, 18.2, and 18.3 - Geoff Arnold, Richard Hadlee, and Otis Gibson respectively.

Incredible beyond words!

Best Strike Rate ever in ODIs
Mustafizur has bowled 452 deliveries in ODIs and has picked up 26 wickets. For anyone who has bowled that many deliveries and picked up that many wickets, he has the BEST Strike Rate ever. No one even comes close to his 17.3. The next best strike rates among all bowlers that have bowled at least 450 deliveries or taken at least 25 wickets are 21.7, 23.4, and 24.2 - Otis Gibson, Ryan Harris, Corey Anderson and Mitchell Starc respectively.

To put it in layman terms, Mustafizur picks up an ODI wicket in every 3rd over he bowls. That is beyond SUPER!

Best Average ever in T20Is
No one, absolutely no one has a better average than Mustafizur's in T20Is. That 13.95 average is the best in the world for anyone who has taken at least 10 wickets in T20Is.

Mustafizur has bowled over 50 overs and taken over 20 wickets in T20Is. Among all bowlers who have done at least one of those in T20Is, the next best averages are 14.4 (Ajantha Mendis), 14.7 (Samuel Badree), and 15.2 (Al Amin Hossain).

*                    *                   *

Mustafizur is an exceptional and rare talent. The world has not seen any like him. While the world has been raving about another 20 odd year old fast bowler, Mohammad Aamer, Mustafizur has been working wonders with the ball and wowing everyone.

He has impressed in the IPL, he has impressed in international cricket, and he has a long long way to go.

Sure the career has been a short one. But his ability has demonstrated that batsmen will not find him to be easy picking any time soon.

This 20 year old boy deserves all the applause he has been getting and more.

Expect him to go a long way and break many records.

Bangladesh's 2nd Test Victory; Historic?

Cricinfo has termed Bangladesh's test win over the West Indies as "historic".

Is it really?

To be honest I expected this Bangladesh win as soon as I heard that West Indies will be fielding a second string side; it hasn't come as a surprise or a shock to me.

It is only their second test victory ever, with the previous one coming against Zimbabwe over 4 years ago.

9 years, 60 test matches, 2 wins, not good!

Only a fool will think that Bangladesh has made progress with this win.

Sure its a great win for them; but it needs to be looked at in perspective.

If it wasn't for the WICB, WIPA, and a contractual dispute, Bangladesh would not have had this win.

The West Indies handed it to them on a platter and Bangladesh did well not to lose it.

Besides Tamim Iqbal's century and a solid knock from Junaid Siddique there weren't any notable batting performances.

The spinners looked good but only because they were up against a side that looked more like a cricket club than an international team.

The win is good for their confidence no doubt, but I'm afraid I don't think it is historic.

Bangladesh still have a lot more to do to make me believe that they can compete at this level.

Why the Minnows may Surprise a few at the ICC World Twenty20

All of them have Super 8 aspirations.

In a way it makes sense that they are not thinking big, and just looking to make it to the next round; but in all seriousness only 1 of them have the chance to get there - either Bangladesh or Ireland.

But they may give you more surprises than you think; I have the reasons why.
  1. Its twenty20, its anybody's game!

  2. Bangladesh upset a few in the 2007 20-20 world cup; no reason why they can't do the same here.

  3. Ireland have a 100% record in T20 internationals.

  4. Netherlands have Dirk Nannes! You never know what he can do, especially when the men facing are English and Pakistani.

  5. Scotland have Gavin Hamilton. I'm not sure if that counts for anything, but can't leave the out when I'm talking up the rest.

  6. The Deshis have shown some damn good fight in the warm ups. Watch out India, watch out Ireland!

  7. Any team with a Shakib in them cannot be taken lightly!

  8. Nor can any with an Ashraful, a Tamim Iqbal, and a Mushfiq Ur Rahim.

There will be some major upsets witnessed if any of them besides Bangladesh make it to the Super 8s; and even moreso if any of them get past the Super 8s.

But its 20-20, and one never knows what comes your way - beware of the minnows!

Shakib Shakin it UP

What happens when one of your favorite cricketers goes up against another?

Or rather, lets say one of the flavors of the season comes up against another flavor of the season?

There are bound to be fireworks, and one is going to come out on top.

There will be winners and there will be losers.

There will be heroes and there will be villians.

No villians or Heroes here. I'm having my Heroes withdrawals since it went on a 3 week break.

There was a Hero though, down at the Bangla stadium in Bangladesh.

The same Hero I have been talking about over at the BCC!

Shakib!

The Lankans experienced some SHAKIBBING, and that too not for the first time.

I'm telling you this kid is quite something.

He's had a phenomenol 2008 and 2009 promises to be even more so.

I reckon that if Bangladesh are to one day become a force in international cricket, Shakib Al Hasan will be at the forefront of that force.

Ashraful, Rahim, Iqbal, and Murtaza won't be far behind, but this 21 year old will be the one to watch out for.

If you have been busy following the global media coverage of the Warners and the Ryders, and the Pietersens and the Haydens, make sure you go back and catch up on some SHAKIBBING.

And some more.

In case you've missed it, I'll take you on a quick trip down memory lane.

It all started with two magnificent ODI innings of 75 and 108 against Pakistan in April last year. The first one almost helped Bangladesh chase down 308.

He seems to have a thing for those big run chases.

Bowling figures: 2-50 and 1-34.

Then came that test match against New Zealand in October.

7-36 to rock the kiwis and an innings of 71 to give them a difficult target, which the Kiwis managed with just 3 wickets left.

It was another nearly effort by Shakib.

He's got the Bangladeshis close a number of times, soon he'll be closing the deal for them too.

A month later was a tour down to South Africa.

Two innings losses for Bangladesh against the best test side of 2008, but Shakib, with 5-130 and 6-99 showed that that 7 wasn't a fluke.

On the same tour, Shakib had shown South Africa what he was capable of in the 1st ODI of the series. He was the pick of the bowlers with 2-48 and yet again got Bangladesh close to the target with a knock of 51.

He doesn't disappoint this kid.

Alright, so he doesn't finish the job, but I'm telling you a few more years and he will be what Aravinda De Silva was for Sri Lanka.

Pakistan done, New Zealand done, South Africa done.

Now it was Sri Lanka's turn.

First he bundled Jayawardene, King Sanga and Co. for below 300 with yet another 5 wicket haul, his 4th in as many months.

Then he gave them a scare with a beautious 96 that got Bangladesh to within a 100 runs of an impossible 4th innings target of 521.

The next test against the Lankans was a more sedate one but Shakib still managed a 4 wicket haul in the 1st innings and a knock of 46 in the 2nd.

Then the year turned and the Zimbabwe joined the two Asians for a tri-series.

They must have heard of Shakib and the ing.

Surely they must have.

And they got it too.

3-23 and an innings of 52.

Bangladesh though, still not over the winning line.

Today, however, was different.

Sri Lanka bowled out for 147 without a single wicket to Shakib - shocking!

Bangladesh, with an easy target to chase, down at 11-3 - not shocking!

Who do you call?

Shakib ofcourse!

From 11-3, it took Shakib a mere 20 overs to smash an unbeaten 92 and take Bangladesh to victory and to the final of the tri-series.

I'm telling you, with time this would be the norm.

Shakib at the forefront of every Bangla victory.

Wait and Watch!

Think Again!

For all those who thought:

1. Australia were the weak side going into the 1st test against India

2. Ricky Ponting cannot score in India to save his life

3. The ICL had killed Bangladesh cricket for good

4. The Sri Lankans would not bend over to please the BCCI

5. Harbhajan would maul the Aussies

Think Again!

I feel sorry for the New Zealanders. But Bangladesh has suddenly excited me!

I also feel sorry for the Indians - Ponting is back in form. Maybe he'll get to Lara's record before Sachin does!
