World Twenty20: 12 Captains, 12 Facts, 12 Questions

Just one more day to go before the ICC World Twenty20 kicks off.

I have previewed all the 12 teams and reviewed all the warm up matches for you, which I will sum up in another post.

But before that, here's something to think about regarding the 12 captains at the World T20.

Kumar Sangakkara

He has never captained Sri Lanka in an international cricket match; on the 8th against Australia will be his first.

What does this tell you about Mahela Jayawardene?

Ricky Ponting

Despite claiming that he doesn't really enjoy 20-20 cricket, he has captained in more T20 internationals than any other captain.

What does this tell you about Cricket Australia?

Gavin Hamilton

He is another one who will be making his debut as a captain in T20 internationals during the world cup.

Who has he replaced as Scotland Captain?

Younis Khan

He has captained Pakistan only once before in a T20 international match.

Can you tell me when?

Paul Collingwood

He captained England in the previous 20-20 world cup as well. Shocking!

Have England ever before had the same captain for two consecutive world cups (ODIs and T20)?

Graeme Smith

He has the best win-loss ratio among all captains at the World T20 who have captained in atleast 5 T20 internationals.

Who has the best record as captain in T20Is (min 5 matches)?

William Porterfield

He is the only captain in the tournament who has never lost a T20 international while leading his side.

Which teams have Ireland beaten under Porterfield in T20Is?

Mahendra Singh Dhoni

He holds the record for the most consecutive wins in T20 internationals as captain.

How many?

Daniel Vettori

He is the only bowler at the 20-20 world cup who can be classified as a bowler.

Can you find something more interesting about him?

Jeroen Smits

He is the oldest captain in the competition.

How old is he?

Chris Gayle

He is the only century scorer in T20 internationals, but he doesn't hold the record for the highest score by a captain in a T20 innings.

Who holds that record?

Mohammad Ashraful

He is not the youngest captain at the ICC World Twenty20. Shocking!

Who is?

Mahela quit way too early and for something that should have been ignored by their Board.

Ireland's record is interesting. Maybe they could upset Bangladesh and reach the second round.

did younis captain the team when we played a t 20 in south africa and were beaten comprehensively. i remember smith and botsman smacking our bowlers all over the park, and our batting failed. I think inzi didnt play that game. not sure though

Krish: wat surprises me more was that Mahela did not miss a single game due to injury or just rest during his captaincy stint - he played every single Test, ODI, and T20..

Ireland won the 20-20 WC Qualifying trophy and were unbeaten, hence the record. But I think the Deshis might score on them. Would be a good match nonetheless.

Farooq: you're right abt that.. it was Pakistan's tour to SA in 2007, just b4 the WC.. Inzi rested and Younis captained.. we got thrashed.

Sri Lanka's situation captaincy wise looks similar to where India was at the beginning of the previous T20 WC.

A captain doing well quit (Dravid/Mahela)
    Batsman keeper named skipper (Dhoni/Sanga)

    Team wasn't favored to win.

Although the King has been tipped for captaincy since a while and Sri Lanka's team still counts too much on Jayasuriya to fire. the rest of the team seems to be assigned the task of rebuilding the innings should Sanath depart early.

That's an interesting point u raise.. I didn't see that analogy..

U reckon Lanka's good enough for the title?
