Sachin Declines, Will Dhoni Accept?

Sachin Tendulkar has declined the captaincy of the test team 2 days before the BCCI were to announce India's test captain for the series against Pakistan.

Well that puts to rest the theory I had about Sachin wanting to captain the side one more time before throwing in the towel. Reports are mentioning that the Board are going to hand it over to Dhoni, however former greats, such as Chappell, Shastri, and Gavaskar feel that they may not be the best idea.

Dhoni has thus far impressed in the T20 and ODI captaincy and hasn't shied away from assuming responsibility, as he proved by coming in at #4 against Pakistan yesterday, however I personally think that wicket keeping, batting in the middle order, and captaining the side is just too much pressure for any individual to handle. Will Dhoni be able to do it?

I don't remember any wicket keeper being a successful test captain. The only other recent example that comes to mind is Moin Khan who was reasonable successful. India look set to enter a new era , with Dhoni at the forefront. Seeing him in the T20 world cup, the ODIs against Australia, and last night against Pakistan, I feel, he can go on to become one of India's best and the best ever wicket keeper captain ever.

    Dhoni will accept
He still has a long way to go before he can even come close to Ganguly's successful record

Definitely long way to go Tayyab, but I think he has it in him to lead from the front. Fearless characters are generally good leaders. Thats why I've been on Afridi's case as well.

Viv Richards, Imran Khan, Steve Waugh, Saurav Ganguly - all these guys were fearless..Dhoni's in the same mould. I don't mean to compare him to the 4 names I mentioned, but I just think he can go on to be one of the best.

    Time will tell...

Sachin, has more of a defensive mindframe... I think he wants to focus on his batting. Whatever the reason, I think this will be good for India - I agree with Q that Dhoni is better in the long run. But he is in un"tested" waters :)

I think theres a much bigger story behind why first Dravid resigned and then Sachin Declined. Theres something cooking behind the scenes in Indian cricket.

If dhoni does accept the captaincy i dont think he will be a successful test captain cuz tests are altogether a different game from ODIS and T20 and requires a different mind set and seeing dhonis captaincy i dont think he has that in him to be a test captain!! i think thet shud go back to ganguly

Jawad - He may not be successful initially, but in the longer term I think he will be. Agreed that tests is a different ball game, but Dhoni has it in him to be a leader.

Nevertheless, I have a feeling BCCI will not announce Dhoni today. I'm sensing someone else. A senior player...
