Asia Cup 2008: Misbah, Skipper..

From Cricinfo Ball by Ball:

Third powerplay on. Two fielders out of the inner circle. Misbah had opted for three men out in the last powerplay.

I don't know if captains have done this in the past, but this is the 1st time I've seen or read about it.

What more, the move resulted in 3 wickets for Pakistan in the first 2 overs of that 2nd powerplay.

Pakistan has a new captain, but is he here to stay?

I think this opening pair of Butt-Jamshed is interesting. Reminiscent of the legendary Anwar-Sohail combination - lefty/lefty, fast-paced, etc.

For Misbah to succeed, he will need a lot of support. The leash, as you call it, must go. But I prefer Misbah, the batsman, under a captain like Wasim Akram.

well I was never in favour of making the quick change...its just not fair...on Malik. But since they have gone ahead and done it once again...they should stick to it now. Give him the chance...to prove it.

Its the easiest task in the world it seems to be the Paki captain. Just get in the team and in a a year or so you get your moment...

Saqib - He read the script to perfection .. Sure it was Younis who guided them, but without Misbah it wouldn't have happened.

I agree Sledge. Nasir had done well against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh but people had said bullying weak attacks is no big deal and that he plays too many shots. Last night those too many shots set up Pakistan's win. Promising opener.

I just hope Salman-Nasir don't go down the route of the other left handed opening pair we had: Taufeeq-Farhat.

VM - ur absolutely right. For any Paki captain to succeed, the leash must go. In Misbah's case it might not be as tight as it is in Malik's case - I will point out why in a post soon.

Misbah the batsman is good but I reckon he gave his best ODI batting performance last night - and he was captain.

UTP - the change was forced as Malik was injured and didn't play. As Wasim says, Malik will be back against Bangladesh and captain the team.

Misbah has been Vice Captain for some time and honestly there was no one in the team who could have been Malik's deputy.

There have been no other Paki players who have been in the team for a year or less and become captain.

It took Wasim Akram 10 years, Waqar Younis 12 years, Inzamam 13 years, Malik 7 years...
