Asia Cup 2008: Why is Irfan Pathan Playing?

vs Pakistan: 10-0-68-0

vs Sri Lanka: 10-0-80-1

vs Sri Lanka, Final:

10.6 Pathan to Jayasuriya, 1 run, 114.6 kmph delivery off the scrambled seam, outside off and Jaya retains the strike with a dab to Ishant at third man

10.5 Pathan to Jayasuriya, no run, 127 kmph delivery and outside off, cut hard but straight to point. A deep point is in place now

10.4 Pathan to Jayasuriya, FOUR, And again. Yummy little short-arm cut over point. Typical Jayasuriya. Great to watch. A tad short in length and outside off, Jayasuriya went back to carve it up and over

10.3 Pathan to Jayasuriya, FOUR, 113.02 kmph drifts down leg and Jayasuriya tickles it to fine-leg boundary. Ten runs from the first three balls. Jayasuriya is going after Pathan.

10.2 Pathan to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, a 99.02 kmph slower one and Jayasuriya dashes down the track and is a touch early into his lofted shot but clears the covers. Sehwag ran back but couldn't reach it.

10.1 Pathan to Jayasuriya, FOUR, 125.3 kmph gentle seam-up delivery outside off and Jayasuriya blasts it off the back foot through covers.

Why is he playing?

That said, Lankans seem to be in trouble. Not cause of Pathan though.

Or for that matter what is Robin Uthappa doing in the team? except for maybe Dhoni's penchant of throwing a surprise in the finals with the team composition. Instead Yusuf would have been more handy given that you just have 4 front line bowlers and he could have chipped in with his fastish off-breaks.

Well I can understand Yusuf being dropped - he has been disappointing throughout the Asia Cup.

But thats true - Uthappa has no business being there. Wonder why Dhoni continues to bank on 7 batsmen.

A bowler instead would have been better. Chawla for instance - 2 spinners would have been good on such a pitch.

But then with chasing in mind, maybe the 7 batsmen will come into play.

I think the seven batsmen might come in handy later on. On this pitch any team batting first will get 300. So the batting has to be strong to chase.

Looks like uncle Jayasuriya is on his way of making the first double in an ODI ?

I wouldn't want to Aarpy now, first you drop a sitter and then hit for 26 runs.

You don't need a specialist batsmen coming in so late in the order. Pathan is not bad with the bat and as is Praveen, who opens for his state side Uttar pradesh in list A matches.

I expected the 200 before as well during the Asia Cup. Lets see if Jaya can get there this time.

RP is going to pay big time.

Tri - I believe Dhoni used the same logic.

Seriously, both him and Uthappa. Pathan seems to have lost the swing while bowling and is only able to swing the bat for nothing.

As for 7 batsman, I wonder if it has anything to do with Dhoni's superstition.

    Is there a superstition VM?

I know he was with Jogi Sharma, but with 7 batsmen too?
