Gavaskar Should Have Known Better

Failed former cricketer.
Making a living by telling international cricketers to do what he couldn't.
Made out to be a super coach by the Indian media.
Milking the owners of his franchise through nepotism.

These are the few things that Sunil Gavaskar has said regarding John Buchanan.

A bit uncalled I think.

Failed cricketer or not, Buchanan is arguably the most succesful coach cricket has ever seen.

So to say something like that is not justified.

It is one thing to criticize his ways and theories, another to criticize the man.

Had Gavaskar only talked about how worthless the multiple-captain theory was, it would have been fine.

To go on and attack the man behind it, the way Gavaskar has done, is not justified in my view.

What's more is that Gavaskar has blamed Buchanan of nepotism claiming that "he is milking his owners", i.e. Shahrukh Khan.

Now if Shahrukh Khan was being milked, I'm quite sure he would have known that.

I don't think that Buchanan has been able to talk Shahukh Khan into hiring support staff that may not be required by the Knight Riders.

Not at all.

SRK may not know his cricket, but he surely knows how to do business.

For Gavaskar to blame Buchanan like that and suggest that Shahrukh is being milked is not only naive but utterly foolish.

Isn't Gavaskar part of the IPL Governing board?

In that case he should have definitely not spoken like this.

And if he sincerely thought that the "poor owners" were being milked then why didn't Gavaskar try and talk to SRK about that?

Surely that would have been the wiser thing to go.

SRK is also not one to stay quiet.

His response was to tell Gavaskar to buy a team of his own and implement his ways.

Now if that were to happen, we can be sure that Gavaskar will not include Rohan Gavaskar and his mumbai pals in the plan. Would he now.

One person I would really like to hear from regarding all this is Shane Warne.

When will the King of Spin speak up?

Oh and one more thing. Gavaskar has criticized the Indian media as well of giving Buchanan and other things undue importance.

The same Indian media that Gavaskar is a part of!

    Q,

true.. it should be warney's comments that should be taken seriously.

SMG and SRK both have something to sell, SMG his articles and his papers, SRK, his team!

SW got nothing to sell, so i did prefer him talking!

Finally! Someone not wanting a death sentence for SRK for defending his team's coach.

Gavaskar was great on the field but some of his comments are a bit too harsh. This is not the first time he has been extremely insulting. His comment about the David Hookes thing was even worse.

All SRK said was to give the idea some breathing space. Everyone has an opinion but there is a way to express it. SRK and others at KKR might have some views on an opener who scored 36 off 60 overs but it doesn't mean they should talk about it.

Gavaskar has a tendency to open his mouth too mouth. It's about time someone shut it, i.e. SRK. Good response.

Err... that should read "too much".

I may not tend to agree with mosty of what SMG has to say but why is it so that foreign coaches come with an entire entourage and find employment for them. Look at IPL's support staff population and you know many IPL owners have no clue how they are being swindled.

I can't wait to hear Warne.

Ankit, sure they got something to sell but SMG should not have attacked the man!

Yeah a bit too too much Amy!

Som u cant be serious about them being swindled.. are you?

Are u saying the Indian team does not have a huge support staff? The coach, the bowling coach, the fielding coach, the physios, the trainers, the analysts, they're all there. So is the BCCI being swindled?

Shane Warne himself has a huge suppport staff - there's the manager, the trainer, the analyst, the mentor and God knows what.

U think SRK will hire jst anyone Buchanan says he wants? Surely SRK is shrewder than that..

Here is it Q very disappointing to say the least. How come the 30 probes for T20WC haven't been named yet by Pakistan ?

No NC.. that was not on everyone's mind.

    1) Buchanan is not milking SRK..
    2) The KKR owners are not "poor souls"
    3) Buchanan is not made out to be a super coach by the Indian media. He IS a super coach. The world knows it. Shane Warne would disagree but he's the only 1.
    4) He's not making a living by telling int'l cricketers wat to do. People are asking him to do that.

Maza whats so disappointing abt that?

Besides Shoaib Akhtar, everyone really picked themselves.. Thats the only bad decision IMO.

As for the 20-20 probables.. PCB is waiting to hear from the ICC regarding the ICL cricketers who cancel their contracts. They've gotten an extension from the ICC.

Q, if Indian team had a five-member support staff, that's perfectly understandable, for they are dealing with say some 30-odd players for three different formats throughout the year. But when KKR goes for something similar, it's foolhardy.
Coach's are the most exaggerated role in cricket, especially when you are talking about quality sides. Shane Warne would vouch Buchanan was just lucky yo be at the right place at the right time. A god coach always has an eye in the future and Buchanan had none. Australia clearly had built their castle on the collective genius of a constellation of star players and not Buchanan's acumen.
At the other end, John Wright and Gary Kirsten proved the best way a coach of a quality team can contribute is by always ensuring that they never cross the limit.

As I said, I have strong objection when foreign coaches comes with their own entourage. This buy-one-get-five schemes simply doesn't convince me.

And yes, I have objection to Robin Singh's stature as India's fielding coach as well. All along, he has been doing the drills only, something even I can do. Since he joined, he has not produced a single slip fielder and does he care what would happen when Dravid,Laxman and Tendulkar retire? Yuvraj has already made a fool of himself in the slip and the rot runs deeper.

I agree with Som's assessment on Buchanan that he was lucky to be at the right place at the right time. It was the collective genius and ability of the Australian players that made them invincible, I bet Javed Miandad wouldve been considered a super coach had he been the coach of the australian's during that time frame.

I personally believe the coach of a 'national' team is the most over rated component. Yes, u definitely need a coach at school, college, under-17, under-19 levels, but once selected for the national duty a player has already learned or should know that his elbows should be tucked behind while playin a straight drive. If a coach is teaching the player to do that at national level then there is something seriously wrong somewhere!

Coming to SRK-Gavaskar showdown, gavaskar was wrong to attack Buchanan on a personal level, it was uncalled for. SRK did the right thing by putting Gavaskar down. But, Buchanan's theory of multiple captains is plain stupid to say the least. I can only think of someone having a bit too many shots of vodka to come up with a theory like that.

Som and LIB, I agree with your comments. Valid points u both make.

Having said that, I still feel that it was not Gavaskar's place to comment on Buchanan in that manner.

I'm not in support of the multiple captain theory either, and I posted on that previously. However as I said, to attack the theory is one thing, to attack the man behind it is another and uncalled for.

I don't think you can really blame Gavaskar for this. He has been said a lot of things before, remember the Calcutta incdent? What he said came out of genuine thinking, and not mud-slinging.

But what he said abt buchanan was mud slinging.
