Pakistan Doesn't Need a Batting Coach, They Need a Long Term Vision

The PCB have asked Javed Miandad to help the Pakistan batsmen before next month's Champions Trophy in South Africa.

Why!?

The PCB feels that the Pakistani batsmen who struggled against the swing in Sri Lanka need help.

Sure they need help, but a batting advisor is not going to do them any good whatsoever.

How can the PCB actually think that Miandad can help these batsmen out and overnight turn them into good players of swing with solid techniques?

Some of these batsmen have been around for more than a decade and their techniques haven't changed.

During this last decade Pakistan have had Zaheer Abbas as a batting coach; they have had the likes of Mudassir Nazar, Bob Woolmer, and Richard Pybus as head coaches; they have asked Geoff Boycott to come down to Pakistan for 2 weeks to help batsmen; even Miandad has coached Pakistan not once but thrice during the last 10 years.

On top of that, world-class batsman such as Inzamam Ul Haq and Mohammad Yousuf have been around the team all this while.

If all these men have not been able to improve the techniques and temprament of Pakistan's batsmen, then what will a Miandad do in a few days at a training camp?

Not much I'm afraid.

Take the example of Imran Nazir.

He made his debut in 1999; during the last 10 years, I have not seen even a slight change in the way he bats.

His technique, his temprament, the kind of shots he plays, the way he gets out, it has all been the same during this last decade.

All the coaches mentioned above have worked with Nazir, and yet there has been no improvement.

So is it really batting coaches or consultants that Pakistan needs?

Absolutely not!

The problem is that the thinking is too short term.

No one in the PCB has the long term vision to try and solve the basic problem that batsmen in Pakistan face.

To produce quality batsmen with solid techniques and good temprament, they need to be up against quality bowling at the domestic level; and to produce quality bowlers, Pakistan needs conducive pitches that will motivate youngsters to take up pace bowling.

Till Pakistan's batsmen are tested in domestic competitions, till they learn to fight and grind it out at the first-class level at home, they will not be able to cope with seam and swing in foreign conditions.

A Javed Miandad, or for that matter any batting advisor, cannot help the current lot of Pakistan batsmen.

The batsmen of the future, however, can be helped.

Only if the PCB starts thinking long term and starts thinking now.

Meeting the Commentators

I was downstairs at the entrance of the stadium that is dedicated for the media men, journalists, photographers, and commentators, when Geofrrey Boycott walked in led by a Ten Sports staff member.

He was supposed to lead Boycott to the commentary box, which he had no idea about and got lost - that led him back to the entrance I was at.

There I got my first experience of hearing Geoffrey Boycott speak in person.

Those of you who know him or have met him need no explanation about what he said to the man who had lost his way.

That's when I interrupted and offered to lead him to the commentary box.

It wasn't the poor guy's fault.

If its your first time at the stadium, you can easily get lost, and the only reason I knew the way is because the commentary boxes are right next to the media centre, which I have been to an umpteen times during the last week.

So there I was leading Boycott to his position.

In the elevator, he introduced himself to me as Geoffrey.

I humbly replied, "Yes Mr. Boycott, I know you. Who doesn't."

You don't want to know what his reply was.

Above, you see him being breifed on his schedule for the day by the Ten Sports team.

He was kind enough to allow me a picture with himself, and as the photographer clicked us, Boycott said, "This is my cousin from Dubai. Good man."

What a pleasant man! And it was a pleasure to meet him.

As I walked back down to the entrance to guide more media men, there was Tony Greig sitting down with his son.

I had been in touch with Tony Greig over email regarding an article he was writing for the Dubai Sports City magazine, so he knew who I was when I introduced myself.

He seems much more excited in the commentary box.

In person he came across as very soft spoken and was also kind enough to stand up for a picture.

I led him up to the commentary box as well.

As the elevator arrived for my next trip down, put of the sliding door walked Rameez Raja, Waqar Younis, and Dean Jones.

Later I managed to click Dean Jones while he walked through the media centre, where I am right now.

The commentators are in the room right next to mine.

And I really wasn't making all those trips down to guide the media men up - I had to go down for my smoke breaks.

That's where I am going right now!

Boycott Loves Afridi to Bits!

Geoffrey Boycott on Shahid Afridi:

"He can't change his game because he is a hitter of the ball. He is a wonderful hitter and I think he is one of the biggest hitters that the game has seen. He has a wonderful physique and is a strong lad. But he has no brain. He can't think. He can't stop swiping even if you stood on his shoulder and told him not to hit the ball before the bowler bowled.

I love him to bits and I think he is a smashing lad. He has the gift of natural hand-eye co-ordination to hit the ball, but I am sorry, God didn't give him a cricket brain to think his way through cricket situations. He doesn't have a cricket brain to play technique cricket, so he cannot change. I think he has a natural skill at bowling. But I am afraid, Naseeh, that you and I, and lots of his fans have to love him for what he is, not for what we'd like him to be."

(The full interview)

Boycott makes sense.

Its the golden words at the end where he says that you have to like him for what he is rather than what you want him to be is what truly makes sense.

I have been saying it forever.

It is high time the world stops expecting batting fireworks from Shahid Afridi.

He is a bowler, was a bowler, and forever remain a bowler.

Those constantly asking for his ouster from the team, I would like to ask one question - who would you replace him with?

Since Afridi is the lone spinner in the XI, the replacement has to be a spinner, right?

Pakistan's spin options currently are Kaneria, Fawad Alam, Mansoor Amjad, Rizwan Ahmed, and Abdul Rahman.

Shahid Afridi is better bowler than each one of them.

I reckon that even in test matches, Afridi will be more potent than Kaneria. Where Kaneria picks 5 wickets in 50 overs, Afridi has the ability to do so in 20.

Pakistan needs Shahid Afridi and you gotta believe and understand Boycott's words above.

Boycott attacks Fletcher

Geoff Boycott has come out with a scathing attack on Duncan Fletcher's take on Flintoff's drinking on the last Ashes tour. Those of you who have read that, please read my post 'A coach's betrayal' below, which I posted a couple of days back. Boycott also uses the words 'betrayed' and 'keeping inside the dressing room' and as you would see from my post, I completely agree.

Boycott goes on to say that 'Fletcher should be ashamed' and I think, he definitely should be. Fletcher was England's coach for 8 years and he should stick to that, leave the dirty reporting to the journalists.
