Was it Right to Sack Sarfaraz Ahmed?

Sarfaraz Ahmed is gone.

His time as captain of Pakistan's national team across all three formats is over and for now his time as a player is over too!

While I was still trying to get my head around this decision, Pakistan's new and all powerful Chief Selector announced the Test and T20 teams for the tour to Australia, which left me even more perplexed.

My head is in a cross wire over all these changes and I am still trying to make sense of them.

CAPTAINCY CONFUSION

When the announcement came, the headline read "Sarfaraz Ahmed removed as Pakistan Captain from all 3 formats".

Azhar Ali was announced Test Captain, Babar Azam was announced T20 Captain, and a decision on the ODI captain was deferred till July 2020, which is when Pakistan plays its next ODI.

Within minutes, however, the article was updated:

So which one is it?

Has Sarfaraz been retained as ODI captain or has he been removed?

I still don't know.

WAS IT RIGHT TO REMOVE SARAFRAZ?

There is no easy answer.

Pakistan won the Champions Trophy under him two years ago.

They failed to qualify for the World Cup semifinals but only because of Net Run Rate. They ended the World Cup with 4 straight wins.

Pakistan have won their last 6 ODIs under Sarfraz.

Pakistan have been the number 1 ranked T20 team for two years under Sarfaraz. No Pakistan captain had a better record in T20s than him.

Considering all this, maybe he should have been retained.

But then you think about all those losses in ODIs against the top 8 teams. Besides the wins in CT2017, Pakistan barely registered any victory against the top 8 ODI teams under Sarfaraz.

You think about losing a first ever test series in the UAE, which had become Pakistan's fortress under Misbah Ul Haq.

You think about the clean sweep in the T20 series against a second string, albeit talented, Sri Lanka.

But even then was the captaincy strip warranted?

A closer look at Sarfaraz's captaincy record reveals this:

TESTS
13 matches | 4 wins | 8 losses | 1 draw
568 runs at 25.81 with 5 fifties

He looked out of depth as test captain.

His batting suffered.

While those numbers are not bad, they are not good enough for someone who wanted to bat in the top 6. For a number 7 WK they are also strictly okay. He was far better before he took on the captaincy and was averaging in the 40s.

ODIS
50 matches | 28 wins | 20 losses | 2 NR
804 runs at 32.2 and SR of 87.3 with 5 fifties

A W:L ratio of 1.4 is not bad.

However, a closer look at the wins shows that 17 out of 28 came against the top 8 ODI sides, out of which 8 wins were against Sri Lanka.

Out of the remaining 9 wins, 3 came on the trot leading to the Champions Trophy win.

Pakistan never looked like a world beating ODI team under Sarfaraz, except for that 1 week in 2017, however it wasn't all that bad either.

His own form too was alright. An average of 32 for a wicket keeper is fine in my opinion. He probably did not fit in the top 5 but at 6 or 7 he was fine.

He perhaps could have continued as ODI captain. Maybe he will. Who knows.

T20Is
37 matches | 29 Wins | 8 losses
521 runs at 27.4 and SR of 130.6

Someone who achieved these numbers did not deserve to be sacked.

Under Sarfraz, Pakistan won 11 consecutive T20 series, beating all teams in all sorts of conditions. They beat England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka, and even a World XI.

Pakistan rose to the top of the International T20 Rankings and remained the number 1 T20 team for two years.

They still are the number 1 T20 team, despite the 3-0 loss to Sri Lanka.

Pakistan have won only 1 out of their last 6 T20 internationals, however after a string of wins across 11 successful series, the selectors should have been a bit more considerate.

While remaining as ODI captain is debatable, Sarfaraz surely did not deserve to be sacked as a T20 captain. Even his batting record was fine in T20s.

Sarfaraz was one of the most successful captains in the history of T20 cricket. The least the PCB could have done was give him a chance to lead the team in a World T20.

*                   *                    *

In my view, it was right to remove Sarfaraz as test captain and replace him with Azhar Ali. In fact, Azhar Ali should have always been test captain. It is quite unfortunate that Azhar was made ODI captain and did not get the test captaincy, after Misbah's retirement, because of his failure as an ODI captain.

Removing Sarfaraz as T20 captain is completely unjust. Sure Pakistan lost 3-0 to Sri Lanka but take a look at the 3 years before that. Does that count for nothing?

I wish Babar Azam all the success in the world - as a batsman and as Pakistan's T20 captain. But his time could have come later. Pakistan need his batting right now more than his captaincy.

Sarfaraz should have been the one to lead Pakistan in next year's World T20.

Let Shahid Afridi shine, one final time!

The above table has been doing the rounds of social media since Pakistan’s T20 series loss to New Zealand. It has been shared all over Facebook, Twitter, and Whatsapp with the statement “Shahid Afridi is Pakistan’s worst T20 captain ever”. Ofcourse stats don’t lie and I will be the first person to support any argument with Stats, however one also needs to assess them objectively.

In the above table, Inzamam, Younis, and Misbah can be taken out of the reckoning considering that they have not captained in enough games. Shoaib Malik’s record is largely skewed considering that 7 out of his 12 wins were in matches against Bangladesh (3), Zimbabwe (1), Scotland (1), Canada (1), and Kenya (1). Mohammad Hafeez was definitely a very good captain; arguably the best T20 captain Pakistan has had. He should have continued for longer. His resignation following Pakistan’s exit from the World T20 in 2014 was one of the most selfless acts we have witnessed in Pakistan cricket.

Sure Shahid Afridi has not been as good a captain. But his figures are also not as bad as they are being made out to be. Under his captaincy, Pakistan has won as much as they have lost; alright lost a bit more but just very slightly. When compared to international captains who have captained in at least 10 T20 Internationals, Afridi’s record is better than many including Ricky Ponting, Chris Gayle, and Stuart Broad. It is also not very different from the record of AB De Villiers, George Bailey, Brendon McCullum, and the one and only MS Dhoni!

Before jumping to conclusions like “Afridi is Pakistan’s worst T20 captain”, one must also realize that T20s are very different from ODIs and Tests. While an astute captain with a strong team will win ODIs and Tests frequently, the same is not the case with T20s. The game is so short that a few deliveries change the course of the entire match. That is why one witnesses so many upsets in T20s, as compared to ODIs and Tests. The format is extremely unpredictable and over the longer term majority of the teams have Win:Loss records close to 1:1.

The same is the case with captains who have led their teams in the shortest format for a long time. Because the format has not been around for too long, there are only 21 captains among the 10 test playing nations who have led in at least 15 T20 Internationals. Many of these captains, including MS Dhoni, Bailey, McCullum, Vettori, AB De Villiers, and Afridi have a win percentage in the 47% - 53% range. There are less than a handful of captains who have led in more than 25 T20s and have win percentages significantly higher than 50% - Graeme Smith, Paul Collingwood, Mohammad Hafeez, and Darren Sammy.

This clearly indicates that over the longer term, a team and a captain, will have a win:loss ratio in the vicinity of 1:1. One can take a look at betting sites offers also and they will show similar odds at the beginning of most T20 Internationals.

Then why are so many people eager to have Afridi removed as Pakistan’s T20 captain before the World T20?

He played an instrumental role in the only World T20 that Pakistan won. He was Man of the Match in the semifinal and the final of that tournament. He also played an instrumental role in the only other World T20 that Pakistan reached the final of. He was the Player of the Tournament then. Moreover, the only other time Pakistan were close to playing another World T20 final before Hussey happened, Afridi was the captain.

He has always been a major force in T20 cricket.

He is the leading wicket taker in the world in T20 Internationals. He has one of the best economy rates among the leading wicket takers in T20s. He has won the most man of the match awards in T20s in the history of the format.

Afridi is a T20 King.

Let us also not forget that it is never wise to change the captain so close to a World Cup. Pakistan did not sack Waqar Younis before the 2003 World Cup despite Pakistan going through a continuous rut in ODIs under him. They did not sack Misbah before the 2015 World Cup even though Pakistan went through their worst ever phase in their ODI history under him.

So yes. It will be Afridi who will captain Pakistan in the World T20.

He has already announced that the World T20 will be his last international outing; having already retired from ODIs, Afridi will wave goodbye to international cricket once and for all. He has had an illustrious career spanning two decades and the World T20 is his last chance to shine.

And it is our last chance to have faith in him for one final time.

Let us believe that Afridi can do it again, for one final time. Let the man who has ruled the nation’s heartbeat for 20 years, continue to do what he does best, for one final time. Let Boom Boom resonate throughout the stadiums in India, for one final time. Let us all witness the arms raised aloft wicket celebrations, for one final time.

So don’t let all those stats about his T20 captaincy bog you down. He has led Pakistan to many memorable victories and he still has it in him to lead them to many more. One final time!

World Twenty20: 12 Captains, 12 Facts, 12 Questions

Just one more day to go before the ICC World Twenty20 kicks off.

I have previewed all the 12 teams and reviewed all the warm up matches for you, which I will sum up in another post.

But before that, here's something to think about regarding the 12 captains at the World T20.

Kumar Sangakkara

He has never captained Sri Lanka in an international cricket match; on the 8th against Australia will be his first.

What does this tell you about Mahela Jayawardene?

Ricky Ponting

Despite claiming that he doesn't really enjoy 20-20 cricket, he has captained in more T20 internationals than any other captain.

What does this tell you about Cricket Australia?

Gavin Hamilton

He is another one who will be making his debut as a captain in T20 internationals during the world cup.

Who has he replaced as Scotland Captain?

Younis Khan

He has captained Pakistan only once before in a T20 international match.

Can you tell me when?

Paul Collingwood

He captained England in the previous 20-20 world cup as well. Shocking!

Have England ever before had the same captain for two consecutive world cups (ODIs and T20)?

Graeme Smith

He has the best win-loss ratio among all captains at the World T20 who have captained in atleast 5 T20 internationals.

Who has the best record as captain in T20Is (min 5 matches)?

William Porterfield

He is the only captain in the tournament who has never lost a T20 international while leading his side.

Which teams have Ireland beaten under Porterfield in T20Is?

Mahendra Singh Dhoni

He holds the record for the most consecutive wins in T20 internationals as captain.

How many?

Daniel Vettori

He is the only bowler at the 20-20 world cup who can be classified as a bowler.

Can you find something more interesting about him?

Jeroen Smits

He is the oldest captain in the competition.

How old is he?

Chris Gayle

He is the only century scorer in T20 internationals, but he doesn't hold the record for the highest score by a captain in a T20 innings.

Who holds that record?

Mohammad Ashraful

He is not the youngest captain at the ICC World Twenty20. Shocking!

Who is?
