ICC Champions Trophy Highlights

Perhaps the biggest highlight for the ICC Champions trophy was the massive surprise underdogs Sri Lanka served on a rather sloppy Indian team which managed to keep Sri Lanka’s hopes for the semi-finals alive and kicking until their loss to Pakistan yesterday.

Sri Lanka Outclass India by 7 Wickets
The stupendous knocks delivered by Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka served to allow the Sri Lankans to deliver their bolt from the blue, thanks to the 7 wickets which resulted from these players during the 2nd game of the ICC Champions Trophy of 2017, which took place at The Oval.

Group B is Now Wide Open
The Sri Lankans’ win against India threw the Group B gates wide open, and the winners of the next 2 games revealed who the semi-finalists are. India faced South Africa on the 11th of June and went on to win, and Sri Lanka met Pakistan on the 12th, but did not fare so well. India and Pakistan are going through.

Quotable Quotes on the ICC Champions Trophy
Man of the Match winner Kusal Mendis was quoted as calling the game a good wicket. He mentioned that the Indian team had gotten off to a good start, thanks to Dhawan’s 100, and that his team member, Danushka, had offered him good support. He stated that it was his 1st game against India, and that he was happy to have contributed to the win, as were the NZ betting sites offering markets for this game, no doubt.

Angelo Mathews said that it was a coveted win, beating India, and agreed with Mendis in that it was a good wicket. He went on to say that the Sri Lankan bowlers did a great job of restricting the Indian players to 321, which allowed Sri Lanka to focus on an easy-to-chase target. Matthews said that he simply focussed on hitting as many in the nets as he could, and this had made him feel good, and helped him get back into the game after his injury.

Virat Kohli has said that his team felt that they had what was required on board, and that their bowlers were trusted, but that the Sri Lankans had played very well. While his team managed to keep the momentum up during the innings, the Sri Lankans picked areas to hit well, and executed these hits brilliantly. He ruefully stated the dangers of 20/20 hindsight, but felt that his team had bowled decently, although he did add that their execution may not have been up to scratch, and that this was something to take into consideration going forward.  Kohli graciously gave credit where credit was due.

Sri Lanka managed to beat the Indian team by a total of 7 wickets in order to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals for the ICC Champions Trophy alive at 22:50 hrs IST.

Quick Facts about the Two Teams

  1. The Sri Lankans have suffered 4 run-outs so far.
  2.  Sri Lanka has had 8 century partnerships for 2nd wicket since the ICC World Cup of 2015.
  3. Shikhar Dhawan is the fastest Indian, 77, and 3rd quickest in terms of 10 ODI centuries. He is ranked just after Quinton de Kock, 55, and Hashim Amla, 57.

The Grand World Cup Final: It is all about Sachin Tendulkar!

The first ever ICC World Cup Final between two Asian nations.

The first ever ICC World Cup Final between two host nations.

The third ICC World Cup Final for both teams.

An ICC World Cup Final between the two teams that lost in the Final to Australia during the last two World Cups.

An ICC World Cup Final involving the highest ODI run scorer and highest ODI wicket taker in their last ever ODI*.

There couldn't have been a bigger World Cup Final than India vs Sri Lanka.

Well yes there could have if it was Pakistan vs India, but with the presence of Sachin Tendulkar and Muttiah Muralitharan, it makes it a Grand Final.

I watched Sachin make his debut 22 years ago when he toured Pakistan and faced a bowling attack comprising of Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Aqib Javed. He lasted only 2 balls and lost his wicket to Waqar Younis.

For the next 22 years, however, he tormented bowlers the world over, notching up century after century.

He now stands on 99 international centuries - 48 in ODIs and 51 in tests. The stage is set for him to bring up his 100th international 100 in a World Cup Final.

The last time Sachin was there, he didn't last too long as McGrath got the better of him.

That was Johannesburg, but tomorrow it will be in his home town - Mumbai!

The stage could not have been better set for the greatest batsman ever to play the game.

A World Cup victory is really the only thing missing from Sachin's overflowing list of achievements. It is the one thing that has remained elusive throughout his 22 year career and something he so dearly wants to achieve.

It is time for India to return all the favours he has done them for the last 22 years!

Sri Lanka will be tough to beat, but I really think that there will be no stopping India tomorrow.

Considering that Muralitharan already has a World Cup victory under his belt, its only fair that Sachin ends up on the winning side tomorrow.

And then at least we will also be able to say that even Pakistan had a hand in helping Sachin Tendulkar fulfil his dream, as it probably would not have happened had he been caught on 27.

For me, its not about India or Sri Lanka tomorrow... to hell with the saying that "its a team game" ..

Tomorrow is all about Sachin Tendulkar, his 100 international centuries, and his first ever World Cup title.

*Only Murali has announced his retirement, but I guess Sachin will as well from the ODI game once India wins the Final.

"Incandescent with the White Light of Spin Bowling Magic"

Thanks to AP Webster for that brilliant description of Ajantha Mendis.

I said it here and now I'll say it again.

Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan, Anil Kumble - move over. All your records are going to be broken by this man.

Balapuwaduge Ajantha Winslo Mendis.

Give him 10 years, and as long as his fingers stay intact, he will break all bowling records - tests and ODIs.

When I wrote that I mentioned these figures:

vs West Indies: 10-0-39-3
vs UAE: 6.3-1-22-5
vs Pakistan: 10-0-47-4

ODI Career: 40.3-3-163-12

Add to this what Mendis did to India today.

8-1-13-6

He did that to arguably the best batting side in the world and definitely the best players of spin.

He did that to a team that Shane Warne could never dominate. Well Warne hasn't played against these players but you know what I mean.

He dominated them, he tormented them, he murdered them, and he buried them as India fell to their worse defeat in recent times.

ODI Career: 56-4-205-20

He could win a test match alone with those figures!

Truly the "Incandescent with the White Light of Spin Bowling Magic"

Asia Cup 2008 Final: Jayasuriya on FIRE!!

15.6 Singh to Jayasuriya, SIX, Third six of the over. The legend is on the hunt here. Banged in short, doesn't have the pace to hurry Jayasuriya who pulls it into midwicket stands. What a wallop. 26 runs in this over. Scintillating stuff. Sri Lanka's fortunes hang on Jayasuriya's bat.

15.5 Singh to Jayasuriya, no run, Oh swing and a miss. Again it was in the slot. Width offered outside off and Jaya wanted to loft it over covers

15.4 Singh to Jayasuriya, FOUR, Carnage continues. RP hurls it short and wide - why, you have to ask him - and Jayasuriya murders it over extra cover. Super batting this. Great entertainment.

15.3 Singh to Jayasuriya, FOUR, Gallops to 77 with a carve over covers. After serving two full pitched deliveries, RP hit the short of length. No luck. Try something else.

15.2 Singh to Jayasuriya, SIX, They have spiked his drinks I tell you. Not that he needs any thing to make him hit more. This time he goes over long-off. Another imperious thrust of the front foot and a clean swing of the blade. Up up and over

15.1 Singh to Jayasuriya, SIX, Wallop. Massive hit over long-on. He thrust his front foot out and swung a full delivery over the boundary.

87* of 58!! He's taking it single handedly to the Indians!

Asia Cup 2008: Why is Irfan Pathan Playing?

vs Pakistan: 10-0-68-0

vs Sri Lanka: 10-0-80-1

vs Sri Lanka, Final:

10.6 Pathan to Jayasuriya, 1 run, 114.6 kmph delivery off the scrambled seam, outside off and Jaya retains the strike with a dab to Ishant at third man

10.5 Pathan to Jayasuriya, no run, 127 kmph delivery and outside off, cut hard but straight to point. A deep point is in place now

10.4 Pathan to Jayasuriya, FOUR, And again. Yummy little short-arm cut over point. Typical Jayasuriya. Great to watch. A tad short in length and outside off, Jayasuriya went back to carve it up and over

10.3 Pathan to Jayasuriya, FOUR, 113.02 kmph drifts down leg and Jayasuriya tickles it to fine-leg boundary. Ten runs from the first three balls. Jayasuriya is going after Pathan.

10.2 Pathan to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, a 99.02 kmph slower one and Jayasuriya dashes down the track and is a touch early into his lofted shot but clears the covers. Sehwag ran back but couldn't reach it.

10.1 Pathan to Jayasuriya, FOUR, 125.3 kmph gentle seam-up delivery outside off and Jayasuriya blasts it off the back foot through covers.

Why is he playing?

That said, Lankans seem to be in trouble. Not cause of Pathan though.

Asia Cup 2008: Run Rate not to come into Play

Unlike popular belief, Pakistan will not have to ensure that they end up on a better run rate than India's if they end up tied on points at the end of the Super-4 stage.

This is what I just read on Cricinfo:

If India lose, and Pakistan beat Bangladesh, Pakistan go through. This scenario will have both India and Pakistan tied at four points, but Pakistan would head into the final by virtue of more wins in the Super Four stage.

However, if India beat Sri Lanka today, it will be all over for Pakistan despite their remarkable victory last night.

I'm hearing that Sri Lanka may rest some key players tonight with Jayasuriya, Murali, and Vaas likely to be rested since they have already qualified for the finals.

That will make India's task definitely easier.

Given that who Sri Lanka will face in the final hinges on today's result, they should be looking to play their best XI. Surely they don't want to face the favorites in the final.

Plus the final is 3 days away, which gives the players ample time to recover.

For India, its their 2nd game in as many days and the heat in Karachi is quite unbearable so they may be a bit jaded from last night.

However, knowing that a win takes them to the finals, I'm sure they'll be pumped up.

Or will they?

Dhoni on more than one occasion has complained about the heat and the schedule, and rightly so.

Maybe he wants to catch the first flight back.

All of Pakistan will be praying for that.

For Sri Lanka - today you've got an additional 150 million supporters!
