Vettori withdrawal gives NZ problems for South Africa Test

In bad news for those who bet on cricket, Daniel Vettori looks increasingly unlikely to play any part in New Zealand’s Test series against South Africa in the new year after his Big Bash League franchise confirmed he had suffered another injury setback.

BBL side Brisbane Heat revealed on Wednesday their spinner aggravated an injury and will be out of action for another six weeks, putting his place in the NZ Test side in serious doubt.

“Dan had a setback over the weekend and despite his best efforts, he is highly unlikely to be ready in time for our ... matches,” Heat general manager Andrew Blucher revealed.

The news is likely to disappoint fans in the betting world. For Vettori has made numerous withdraws this autumn after failing to recover from Achilles and hernia problems. He also suffered a groin injury in July, over which time New Zealand have fallen to India and drawn with Sri Lanka in the bet365 cricket online.

So with Vettori as good as out of New Zealand’s Test squad, decisions must now be taken on who will spin the ball for the Black Caps in January.

Thirty-two-year-old Jeetan Patel is expected to continue his run in the side as replacement, yet many NZ fans in the betting world are concerned Patel cannot meet the required standard. Patel bowled in New Zealand’s series with Sri Lanka and took just four wickets from four innings; he is a year younger than Vettori yet has just 17 Tests to his name. Vettori has 112 international caps.

Maybe New Zealand selectors should think afresh and go with reserve spinner Todd Astle. At 26 years old Astle is hardly an up-and-coming youngster and his only Test appearance, against Sri Lanka in Colombo, yielded just one wicket for 77 runs.

Yet Astle is something new and New Zealand should be looking at fresh blood for the South Africa Test in effort to instil some spark into this flickering side. The legbreaker still has time on his side to develop into a seasoned Test spinner and, if Vettori’s injuries continue, New Zealand may come to rely on Astle over the next five years.

Which IPL Team will bag Shahid Afridi?

Even before wondering that, shouldn't one wonder whether an IPL team even wants Shahid Afridi or not.

He had a terrible season playing for the Deccan Chargers in 2008.

He publicly denounced his captain, VVS Laxman, after the season was over.

There were rumours that he didn't act professionally and missed several training sessions.

So then, why would an IPL team want Shahid Afridi?

Why not I ask.

Afridi helped Pakistan win the World T20 earlier this year.

He was man of the match in both the semi final and final of the World T20.

He has rediscovered his batting form, at least in the T20 version of the game; he recently became one of the few batsmen to hit 3 consecutive 50s in T20 internationals.

He took over the captaincy of the Pakistan T20 team and hasn't lost a game as captain yet.

He is at the top of his bowling form and is still the 2nd highest wicket taker in all T20 internationals.

Moreover, he is playing for South Australia in the T20 Big Bash down under and has delivered 2 consecutive man of the match performances helping SA beat Western Australia and Queensland.

If that is not a T20 match winner, than what is?

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Shahid Afridi will be the most sought after player in the IPL auction set to take place before the 3rd season of the league kicks off this year.

Or rather, should be!

He is in the list of 97 players to be auction, which was released yesterday.

IPL teams, start budgeting for the Boom Boom!

Shahid Afridi is in Manchester, will not be going to Tasmania

And so am I.

Unfortunately Afridi did not have my new UK number, otherwise we would have surely met!

More seriously though, I just found out that Afridi was at Old Trafford Football Club last night for a charity event.

I would have definitely turned up had I known about this before hand; maybe made some donations too.

In other news, Afridi has turned down an offer to play for Tasmania in Australia's Big Bash 20-20 tournament later this year.

Pakistan will be touring New Zealand and Australia from November to January, which will clash with Australia's domestic 20-20 competition.

That's why Afridi decided to turn the offer down.

But Tasmania? I thought it was New South Wales that was interesting in him.

Umar Gul Shows his Australian Colors

Prior to the series against Sri Lanka, he had just returned to Pakistan after a successful stint with Western Australia, whom he represented in the KFC Twenty20 Bash, Australia's domestic 20-20 competition.

He was spotted wearing the Western Australia colors during one of the team's practice sessions.

Showing people your Aussie colors Gul?

Well he has every reason to.

The Twenty20 Big Bash is still going on. The final is tomorrow. Gul has been back in Pakistan for 10 days now. Yet he's still the leading wicket taker of the competition.

Shows why he's one of the finest when it comes to 20-20.

Fiery Gul in Australia

Due to the New Year holidays I missed the progress of Umar Gul and Sohail Tanvir down under in the ongoing Twenty20 Big Bash.

But now, I am back, and am pleased to find that Gul has been in fiery form for Western Australia.

Last week he managed a 4 wicket haul in his first game for WA, and last night he managed 3-21 against Tasmania.

What's more, Gul even hit the winning runs of the only ball he faced in the game - a 4 of the penultimate delivery of the match leading WA to 2nd place in the points table.

Gul even held 3 catches in the match - wonder where he was fielding.

He didn't have that good a game in his 2nd match against New South Wales, where he went for 41 runs in his 4 overs.

On the other hand, Sohail Tanvir hasn't tasted the same success with South Australia losing to defending champions Victoria.

Victoria haven't lost many 20-20 games in Australia over the last 3-4 years. They have also won the competition 3 times on the trot prior to this one.

When South Australia managed 183, they may have smelled a chance with the best 20-20 bowler in the world in their ranks.

But Victoria showed why they are the best 20-20 side in Australia, if not the world.

Hodge, the leading 20-20 run scorer in the world and White, the captain with the most 20-20 wins creamed the SA bowling.

And they have an opener named Blizzard!

AC Blizzard !!!

What an amazing name you have there Aiden.

And apt for 20-20 cricket too.

Its only appropriate that a man with the name 'Blizzard' has a 20-20 strike rate of 177.95!

I forgot I was writing about Gul. Yep he's been fiery with the ball.

But AC Blizzard. Watch out for the future - the papers can have a field day with headlines.

Pakistanis Debut Down Under

The Twenty20 Big Bash, Australia's domestic 20-20 competition got underway a few days back.

Now normally I would not be covering an Australian domestic competition and would be relying on Jrod to hear about how Victoria is fairing, what David Hussey is doing, how Bryce McGain is shaping up, and the other happenings down under.

But this season has been quite different in Australia.

Different for us atleast.

As many as 3 Pakistani internationals have turned out for Australian states in their domestic competitions this season.

First Younis Khan played a few One-dayers and first class games for South Australia.

And now Umar Gul and Sohail Tanvir are playing for Western Australia and South Australia respectively in the Twenty20 Big Bash.

Both the Pakistanis went up against each other 2 days ago as WA took on SA.

Umar Gul even snared up Tanvir's wicket. First ball!

Gul made an impressive debut for his Australian state team picking up 4-15 in 3.2 overs.

His effort though could not help WA to victory who lost by the D/L method.

Tanvir picked up only 1 wicket nd had a forgetful debut with the bat.

I'll be following these 2 down under.

Elsewhere David Hussey continued business as usual smashing a 47 ball unbeaten 100. He even picked up 2 wickets.

Well he's not the future PM for nothing.
