Monty still Important to England Hopes

Alastair Cook has admitted every member of the England squad must do their bit to keep Monty Panesar in high spirits during the Ashes after a tough year for the spinner.

While the popular bowler has found himself behind Graeme Swann in the pecking order over recent years, Panesar has still remained in and around the Test squad and could win his 50th cap during the tour of Australia this winter.

Panesar was named in England’s touring party for the upcoming Ashes series despite a number of disciplinary issues over the past six months.

Moreover, while Betfair pundits have suggested that the left-arm spinner will most likely be used as back-up to Graeme Swann over the next couple of months, Cook has made it clear Panesar could still play a crucial role for England during this tour.

Cook admitted he was aware that the 31-year-old might need special attention during the tour of Australia, where the English are looking to clinch the urn for a fourth successive time.

"We have got to make sure we look after him off the field. Sometimes you take a second spinner on tour and you know you might not play games. It can be very hard to carry the drinks at certain times.

"Clearly he had a tough summer, and probably tough year or so. We need to get Monty in the right frame of mind so if he's called upon,” said the captain ahead of his team’s departure for Australia.

While Panesar does not pose the Australian batsmen the same level of threat a fully fit Swann does now, fans who gamble with betfair know that Monty is still a very useful option to have during a long tour.

However, the tourists will need to make sure the bowler can get his focus on cricket now he’s in Australia after a turbulent summer in England.

Ashes Day 5: Two-Bits

I was expecting an innings win for Australia but Paul Collingwood lived to do what he claimed he would - bat out the game for England.

Australia could not close what really should have been their game, especially after they ran through England's middle order and had them at 127-6.

It was quite unbelievable really, particularly when Monty Panesar came out to bat and went back unbeaten.

Here are my two-bits from Day 5:

  1. Graeme Swann was supposed to be the biggest threat to Australia but he failed to pick up a single wicket; his unbeaten 47 and 31 though probably saved the game for England.

  2. James Anderson managed his 2nd and 3rd highest test score in this match; quite a game to do it in.

  3. Nathan Hauritz with figures of 6-158 surprised me; what shocked me is that he did a lot better than Swann.

  4. There was talk before the Ashes that the batting from the tails will probably decide the series. Australia's tail did not get a chance in this match; England's last 4 wickets, on the other hand, added 108 runs in the 1st innings and an unbroken 125 runs in the 2nd.

I'm not sure whether that says more about England's tail or Australia's bowling.

  5. Ben Hilfenhaus is a bowler and a half; I don't see Lee or Clark playing a single game this Ashes.

  6. Mike Hussey was the only batsman in this match who did not manage to hit a boundary; even Monty managed to hit one!

  7. Why was Mitchell Johnson not bowled near the end of the England's innings? Was Ponting trying to save some money again by handing the ball to North?

  8. This was the first first Ashes Test this decade that ended in anything but an Australian victory. The last time this happened, it was Brisbane and it was 1998.

You Really Think England Can Win?

To say there has been plenty of hype about the Ashes would be the biggest understatement ever.

All the Australian and English blogs have been buzzing with Ashes hype; that is not the surprising bit.

What is surprising is that many believe that England have a real chance at winning the Ashes.

They can't be serious!

I have no idea how anyone can seriously believe that England can win.

Sure they have great batsmen; Andrew Strauss converts 50s to 100s at a better rate than anyone; Kevin Pietersen scores centuries more often than anyone else; Ravi Bopara has knocked centuries in his 3 previous tests.

But their bowling is shit.

I don't even know why Stuart Broad plays international cricket.

James Anderson and Graham Onions hardly look the sort that can run through the Australians.

It is not the West Indies batsmen they're up against. It is the Hughes, the Katich, the Ponting, the Hussey, the Clarke, the North, the Haddin, the Johnson.

That is one heavy batting line up.

Andrew Flintoff is probably the only threat to them but it won't be long before he'll be limping off the field or getting dropped for missing a boat or something.

Graeme Swann is a more than decent spinner, but he's no threat. Definitely not. He was for the West Indians, not one for the Aussies.

Monty Panesar is a joke.

Adil Rashid is probably their best hope but they won't give him a single game.

The Australians recently beat South Africa at home; a team who had not lost a test series in almost forever.

While the English could not bowl out the West Indies to win a game in the Caribbean; sure they beat them at home but the West Indians were hardly interested in being there.

I just cannot see England winning any game in the Ashes; nor can I see how anyone else can.

England 1, Australia 1, & the Orange Cap

England successfully chased 294 against Kiwis.

Australia successfully defended 286 against the Windies.

I was wrong.

But I was right about this - The 2009 Ashes are going to be very competitive!

And I was also right about England, Ross Taylor, Tim Ambrose, and Monty Panesar in Sportsfreak's tipping competition for bloggers.

As a result of which the Orange Cap remains with me for this week as well.

Thank you again Sportsfreak.

Thank you Daniel.

Thank you Andrew.

Thank you Ross.

Thank you Monty.

& Thank you fellow bloggers.

Strauss took the game away from the Kiwis, while the Windies blew their only chance of beating Australia at home.

I really doubt the Aussies will give the hosts another sniff.

It has been quite a come back for Andrew Strauss. His last few tests innings over 2 tests, all against the Kiwis at home and away, have produced 50+ scores. That includes 2 match winning centuries.

Vettori, for some odd reason, couldn't repeat his 1st innings heroics and allowed England to reach the score for the loss of only 4 wickets.

Sportsfreak tells me that Vettori isn't as effective in the 4th innings of matches. Thats quite surprising for a spinner.

The Windies batting line up folded in front of Stuart Clark and Co.

Those Glenn McGrath video tapes that Clark has been studying have proved to be quite helpful. A 5-for in the 2nd innings and 8 in the match for a man of the match performance.

He looks like a duck running up to bowl - I have no idea how he picks up all these wickets.

The Aussies will run away to a 3-0 victory now. They usually give the opposition a chance once in an entire series. If you miss that you can be sure of a handful mauling.

With Hayden and Clarke returning, its going to be tough for the Windies.

For the sake of my Orange Cap, I hope the Kiwis can turn the tables as I have predicted a 1-1 result for the series in the overall tipping competition.

Till then, I will march around cricket blogs wearing my Orange Cap.
