South defeat North in all three-match series

The three-match series are warm-up games, which serve as preparation for the international cricket and 50-over county competition – The Royal London One-Day Cup.

The stats are guided through the Professional Cricketers’ Association Most Valued Player rankings system. It shows how well the players performed during the domestic season, as classifying the key performers according to their skills and merits. The strike rates, captaincy, scored runs, taken wickets, conditions and quality of opposition are part of the criteria which help in qualifying the performers.

The players were selected through the PCA MVP rating method, while the England selectors chose the remaining ones. Each side has eight performers who were automatically selected to join either the South team, with players from southern counties, or North with ones from northern.

Paul Farbrace oversees South and North are coached by Ottis Gibson. In the first-day match, South defeated North by 10 wickets in Dubai. It ended with 202 (50 overs) for North and 205-0 (33.3 overs) for South on March 17th.

Dawid Malan, who is Lions’ and Middlesex’s batsman, hit the decisive 109, helping his team to emerge victorious in the first challenge. Malan and his teammate, Daniel Bell-Drummond, who hit 92, made it through with remaining 16 overs.

North couldn’t make it as smooth and folded for 202 all out. The foothold couldn’t be gained with three wickets taken by Tom Curran.

The second-day match was held on 19th of March, as previously, in Dubai, which ended with South’s win by 47 runs.

Liam Dawson hit 83 helping his team to win again in the second encounter. Sam Northeast, Kent’s batsman, was on the top hitting 118 before Dawson to make South win it by 47 runs.

Dawid Malan showed a brilliant performance again, hitting 78 gaining 2 wickets in 24 runs.
North did their best, with Ben Duckett’s 64 and Tim Bresnan’s 74. However, it wasn’t enough to overturn South’s remarkable result.

As it stood 2-0 up till now, South finished their three-day match series winning by 20 runs in the last encounter in Abu Dhabi on March 21st.

Mark Wood, Durham’s bowler, gained 2-38 for North after stepping on the field after three surgeries on his ankle.

Bell-Drummond hit 81, and Mason Crane ended it with a 4-39 helping South gain their third win in these series.

The last game ended with 40 overs for each side, as it commenced to rain leaving South with a 228-8 dominance over North’s 208.

Tom Curran - Tipped for the top

Tom Curran has been named the Professional Cricketers’ Association’s young player of the year, in the same month that he was brought into the England Performance Programme squad. Curran was presented his award at the yearly gala, alongside Chris Rushworth who won the player of the year award.

The prestigious awards are given out annually to players who are considered the best in their category at county cricket level.

Year 2015 has been an incredible year for the 20-year-old. Alongside his younger brother Sam, the pair have formed a formidable partnership for Surrey, and were key members of the side than won Championship promotion, and got to the Royal London One-Day Cup final. Recently the brothers took 10 wickets in the first innings against Northamptonshire.

The PCA young player of the year has taken more than 70 County Championship wickets this season, including a notable two-seven wicket haul at Surrey’s home ground.

Curran is the son of genuine all-rounder Kevin Curran, who played regular county cricket for Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire, and internationally for Zimbabwe. He was also noted for passing 1000 runs in a season an impressive five times.

Like his father Curran also grew up in Africa and it was here that his talents were first spotted by Ian Greig. The former Surrey player, who now works in youth cricket, observed Curran while playing for his school side and recommended him to PG Academy Director Gareth Townsend.

Upon his arrival Townsend was quoted as saying, “Tom has the potential to be a very special player indeed and I am delighted he will be with the club for the next three years at least.”

Curran is a right armed batsman and is known for his fast bowling. Despite his South African roots he will be eligible for England call ups in October 2015, as he will have completed his required four years residency.

England fans will be eagerly making their bets and tracking their side’s success in the test match against Pakistan.

The County Cricket Report

There has been some excellent county cricket action this week with some thrilling matches taking place in England and Wales. While the media often question the validity of county cricket, but the game continues to thrive, with the eighteen first class sides constantly producing matches that keep fans on the edge of their seats. T20 cricket has definitely increased popularity and this year, NatWest will take up the reigns as the 2014 NatWest t20 Blast will replace the Friends Life t20. Those Punters interested in betting on t20 can get the latest cricket betting odds from betfair.com.

The 18 first class counties compete in three summer competitions –

The LV= County Championship
This competition dates back as far as 1889 and is steeped in history. All County Championship matches take place over four days and points are awarded depending on the result with bonus points added for various batting and bowling targets that are hit. Teams receive 16 points for a win, 8 for a tie, 5 for a draw and 0 for a loss. The sides will then collect between 1 and 5 bonus points depending upon their batting performance and between 1 and 3 for bowling successes. There have been two divisions since 2000 with Durham the reigning champions and Lancashire the Division 2 winners which means they are promoted to the top league for the 2014 season.

The NatWest T20 Blast
Beginning on 16 May 2014, the NatWest T20 Blast will replace the long-standing Friends Life t20. The Finals Day will take place at Edgbaston on 23 August. This is arguably the most popular of the three main county competitions, which is largely down to the exciting format that’s utilised. The 18 teams are divided into two equal groups, and a round robin tournament then takes place. This ensures that all sides will face each other at least once, with six playing both home and away. In each of the two groups, the top four sides will progress to a knockout stage. The Finals Day is then held at Edgbaston to crown the T20 champion. In 2013, the Northamptonshire Steelbacks were victorious.

The Royal London One-Day Cup
The Royal London One-Day Cup replaces the ECB 40 as of 2014. The number of overs has been increased from 40 to 50 which will make the competition very similar to one day international cricket. Like the T20, this event has two groups of nine teams and the top four sides in each group go through to the quarter final stage. The first fixtures are due to take place on 26th July with the final on 20th September at Lords.

While county cricket definitely isn’t perfect, 2014 looks like being a very positive year for the sport. Two of the three major tournaments are being revamped and cricket fans look set for a very exciting summer.

Sohail Tanvir does it for Shane Warne

There must be something about Shane Warne that Sohail Tanvir always brings out the best for him.

He did it during the 2008 IPL campaign, ending the competition as the league's leading wicket taker.

And he did it again for the Rajasthan Royals in today's T20 match against Middlesex Panthers.

The 2008 IPL and County T20 champions met today at Lord's in a game played for the British Asian Trust, one of the Prince of Wales' charities.

Batting first, the Royals posted a winning total of 162 that included an Asnodkar and Kaif consolidation play and a late burst from Mascarenhas.

Even Justin Langer turned out for Warne's team but he couldn't get going with the bat.

In response the Panthers were bowled out for only 116 with Tanvir picking up 3-20 in his 4 overs.

He got the crucial wickets of opener Godleman, Eoin Morgan, and Tyron Henderson, who had appeared for the Royals in this year's IPL.

Tanvir's lack of form for Pakistan did not hurt their chances in the World T20, but it would have been good to see him performing for his country.

Like he does for his IPL franchise.

So what is it about Warne that brings about the best in Tanvir?

Maybe Younis Khan needs to take some tips on what makes Tanvir tick.

Double Hundreds in ODIs

Since the popularity growth of 20-20 cricket, speculation on when a batsmen will get an ODI double hundred and who the first one might be has been doing the rounds.

I have been part of a number of such discussions, even moreso during the IPL.

Adam Gilchrist used to be a unanimous choice as the first one to do it, but he had moved on to greater things.

Sanath Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi are other names that have been thrown around. The former is in his final few years, while the latter can't last 34 deliveries.

Today saw the 8th List A double hundred when England batsman Ravi Bopara hammered an unbeaten 201 for Essex against Leicestershire in the quarterfinal of the Friends Provident Trophy.

Bopara's unbeaten knock came off only 138 deliveries with the help of 10 sixes and 18 fours.

He became the 7th batsmen in the history of List A cricket to get to 200.

Only 3 of those 7 batsmen have played international cricket - Alvin Kallicharan and Alistair Brown being the other 2.

Ali Brown has achieved the feat twice and he's played a handful of ODIs for England.

Bopara was one of the several England cricketers who claimed to have declined an offer to play in the IPL. The reason given was to concentrate on cementing positions in the England side.

Bopara has done himself no harm - he will probably be named in the ODI squad to take on the Kiwis later this month, and this innings will also go some way in fetching him a higher price for next year's IPL.

Well done Ravi Bopara.

I'm not sure how good the Leicester bowling attack was, but a 201* in a 50 over game is an amazing feat.

Who will do it first in ODIs?

That we still don't know.

Hodge's Loss is Yousuf's Gain

Or is it?

Lancashire have lost Brad Hodge for 5 weeks to the Kolkata Knight Riders. But they have managed to procure the services of Mohammad Yousuf for that period since he's not eligible to play in the Indian Premier League.

Till only last year cricketers used to jump at the opportunity to play country cricket, not only for excercising their sport during the off season but also for those extra dollars, or rather pounds to be economically correct.

Today, however, with the emergence of the IPL and top notch dollars associated with it, playing county cricket has become the 2nd best option.

Would Yousuf have been available for Lancashire had one of the francises roped him in? Obviously not.

Hodge is going to miss 5 weeks to play in the IPL. David Hussey is already missing the county season. Shane Warne announced his retirement from county cricket despite being under contract to Hampshire for another year or two.

Moreover, this doesn't apply to international players alone. England and Hampshire's own Dmitri Mascharenas has joined the Rajhastan Royals for 5 weeks giving his home county season a break.

ECB better hurry with that EPL or they may lose a lot more as I hear that next year's IPL is scheduled around the same time. Plus Peiterson and some others are itching to play for some Indian teams.

Well, at the end I guess Mohammad Yousuf will be happy to be playing a form of the game he's good at. But he'll still be rueing his chances of making those dollars in hundreds of thousands.
