Cricket Bloggers on Top of the World

We set up our own University, we hired our own faculty, we got referred by Prem Panicker to the IPL, we even bought and developed our own Island.

And now we are being mentioned in The Wisden Cricketer, The Times, and Linq.

Uncle J's Cricket with Balls was recently the "Blog of the Month" in June's edition of The Wisden Cricketer.

Whereas Patrick Kidd, the Sports Editor of The Times mentioned Well Pitched on his cricket blog. In the same post, he also mentioned the only other blog that covered the IPL as seriously as we did - Outside The Line.

In another post, Patrick Kidd mentioned Miss Field and referred to her legendary post on Graeme Smith & Facebook.

Us cricket bloggers, i.e. the faculty of the Allen Stanford University for Cricket Bloggers are surely going places.

Thats not all though.

I recently received an email from a man named Alpesh from www.linq.in. In his email, Alpesh introduced Linq as:

"Linq tracks posts from Indian blogs and lists them in order of recent interest. We offer syndication opportunities and many tools for bloggers to use in there web sites"

In the same email Alpesh mentioned that Well Pitched had received the following awards on Linq:

1.Best Sports Blog of week on 2008-06-01.
2.Best Sports Blog of week on 2008-06-08.
3.Best Sports Blog of month for May 2008.
4.Best Sports Blog of all time.

I went over to www.linq.in to check out the awards ("Linq's Awards" in the left menu) and figured that there were various categories of awards including best sports blogs, best general blogs, best entertainment blogs, best recipe blogs, and best language blogs.

All from India.

Well Pitched is a Pakistani blog, not an Indian blog, but our majority readers are from India - over 50% of our daily traffic comes from India, which is probably why Linq recognized us.

I hope being Pakistani does not disqualify us from being a part of Linq as we really appreciate their effort of taking in votes, categorizing blogs, and ranking them.

We weren't alone in winning those awards over at Linq. Other faculty members of the Allen Stanford University for Cricket Bloggers won awards as well.

Tim's Third Umpire was also one of the Best Sports Blog for May 2008. While those categorized as the Best Sports Blogs of all time included Homer's Do paise ka tamasha, John's Island Express, Tim's Third Umpire, Golandaaz's Smart Cricket, and Samir's Eye on Cricket.

So Keep it up guys. We are definitely going places, and right now we sure are at the top of the world!

Missing in Action

The blogging world is like a suspense thriller really, you blink an eye and you miss something important.

As always I disappeared for a bit for a day and half during the weekend, and the only reason I am back today is because of the ongoing Pakistan vs India Final of the Kitply Cup.

I usually catch up on the blogosphere on Sundays after Thursday evening, but today was an exception and I realised I had missed quite a bit.

Uncle J Rod got picked as the Blog of the Month in this June's edition of The Wisden Cricketer. congrats Uncle J, you truly deserve it.

Meanwhile the tipping bloggers made their picks for the 20-20 match and the ODIs between England and New Zealand over at Sportsfreak's tipping competition for bloggers.

Miss Field, while congratulating Uncle J for the mention in the Wisden requests for support for the Silly Point, and also ponders who the Wisden will pick next month - us or the Suave one?

Ottayan asks readers on what their superstition used to be during Pakistan and India's matches in the past, while Som wonders why Geoff Lawson even opened his mouth.

Homer decided to go statistical this weekend as he tested Uncle J's theory on Micheal Clarke, and his analysis was as always well backed up blogosphere's statistical grand daddy (or Ninja as Uncle J likes to call him), David Barry.

And, the former Wisden Blog of the Month, King Cricket, told everyone how much they love Paul Collingwood.

While catching up on the cricket news I could not believe that England won the 20-20 match against New Zealand. Its besides the fact that I lost out on a point on the tipping competition, but how can the Kiwis lose to England in the shorter version of the game?

I wonder if $1 million had something to do with that.

In another part of the world, Mohammad Asif, whose case will now not be heard till 22nd June 2008, gave a very interesting interview over the phone booth to a Pakistani newspaper.

Whats funny is that he's thinking about a football career now! 2 weeks in a Dubai jail can do that to you I guess.

And in the West, The Aussies seem to be on top after the Windies had a sniff on day 1. This was Windies' best chance and they blew it up yet again. And that too when the Aussies unleashed their most unexciting spinner ever.

Its always good catching up on cricket - miss a day and a half and you've lost the plot. It was never like this before.

England on Top

Not only did they win the test series against New Zealand, one from England also displaced me from the top position in Sportsfreak's tipping competition.

King Cricket is now at number 1 on the leaderboard and I have to take off my orange cap that I had been proudly wearing for the last 2 weeks.

I have a chance to get it back when Sportsfreak adds on the series tips, but I think my tipping form has slipped.

Typical Pakistani - start with a bang, end with a whimper! Though I'm holding on to the 2nd position currently, I could drop lower. (Need for some bonus points Sportsfreak).

Well I guess since they have been in the Wisden and all and England have won the test series, its only apt that King Cricket sits on top of the leaderboard.

At number 3, there is another Englishman - The Suave one from Republique Cricket. England have reclaimed the number 3 spot in the test rankings and Suave has done the same jumping up from number 5, where he stood after the 2nd test.

Sportsfreak, who is running the competition and at the same time has claimed to "blatant and careful rigging" is at number 4, dropping a spot from the previous tips.

The first Australian, in the form of Miss Field, makes an appearance at number 5 on the leaderboard. Its strange seeing anything Australian so far down a cricket leaderboard, particularly more so when those above are from England, New Zealand, and Pakistan.

The Silly Point, who was sitting pretty at number 2 at the end of the 1st test has dropped to number 6 at the end of the series. He is followed by Moses from Beer and Sport at number 7 and Martyd from Cricket Action and Art at number 8.

The bottom 4 on the board are equal on points with Cricket with Balls, Sports Review, and Ben & Mike from Mike on Cricket completing the leaderboard.

The fact that Cricket with Balls ended last on the leaderboard goes to show that there is no correlation between tipping and cricket blogging.

Sportsfreak promises more excitement with tipping competitions for the upcoming 20-20 game as well as the following ODIs.

Hopefully the Kiwis will do better in the ODIs and the 20-20 game.

Actually, definitely they will do better.

The Cricket Bloggers' Island

Following the successful launch of the Allen Stanford University for Cricket Bloggers in collaboration with Uncle J Rod of Cricket with Balls, Well Pitched is proud to present The Cricket Bloggers' Island, this time with support from Miss Field.

Miss Field has already started raising funds by requesting the bloggers to pledge an amount towards the cost of the Island - US$ 25-30 million.

She has also talked about the Island having its own cricket stadium, cricket team, awards nights.

A great start that, but we needed something more. Something for the bloggers, the inhabitants of the island, to do. A job that would help them survive on the Island.

Thus, here are the jobs that Miss Field and I have found for all of you.

Uncle J Rod will be the Island's cable operator. Entertainment for all will be garanteed. Sexplicit stuff, cricket, lots of Natalie Portman, the cricket with balls TV show, the podcast video and so on. Lots of movies too directed by Uncle J himself.

AYALAC will be the mysterious milkman delivering the white bottles to your doorstep everyday. He will live in his own farm on one corner of the Island herding 1000s of cows. He will spend his nights crawling up the Island's streets taking pictures of bums and posting them on the internet the next day. The mysterious milkman.

Suave will run his own chain of butchery shops supplying the Island with their favorite meats. For a change he won't be butchering the England cricket team and will be content with running those sharp knives across chickens and goats and cows. The cows will be stolen from AYALAC's farm.

The chickens and goats and sheep will be procured from Sportsfreak's farm at the Island. Sportsfreak will be the sole supplier of all meat to Suave and eventually the inhabitants.

Leg Break, Sportsfreak's twin brother, will run the chain of grocery stores hence creating a monopoly of sorts over the food and drink supplies for the Island's inhabitants.

David Barry will serve as the only teacher on the Island educating kids and adults on history and mathematics and statistics and general knowledge. He will ensure that every kid on the Island leaves for the real world a smarter man, e.g. the cricket bloggers' son who became CEO of Oceanic Airlines.

Miriam will be the Island's notary, of Justice of the Peace, who'll double as a Magistrate. She will have to keep her cats away though as we don't want them eating away all the fish, which will be our primary source of food besides Suave's butchered products.

Straight Point, Som, Trideep, and Wasim will be the fishermen catching fish by the bulk for the entire Island. Their economical supplies of fish of all kind for the inhabitants will disturb Suave's butchery business but magistrate Miriam will ensure justice for all parties.

Mike and Ben will provide all the equipment for the fishing - the boats, the rods, the nets, the worms, the hooks, and all the works.

King Cricket will be the hermit who lives on the other side of the Island and doesn't talk to anyone. He runs his own secret business and is self sufficient and non-contributory to the Island's economy.

Martyd will run the art gallery complete with paintings of the Island's scenic locations and waters and mountains.

Naked Cricket and DS Henry will run their book stores selling to the literary types at the Island.

Arjwiz will be DB's best student that all the Island's moms will compare their kids to.

Soulberry will be the retired uncle who always has a kind word or 2 for everyone. He will be the one who everyone invites over for tea and listens to old stories about the Island's history and how we have come this far.

Nestaquin will be the Island's political leader, while Ottayan will run the Island's only newspaper questioning everything that goes on. Nesta and Ott will have this unholy alliance whereby each news article in the paper will ensure that the former stays in rule.

John will make a late entry into the Island to sue Ottayan for copyright violations for using "The Island Express" as the name for his newspaper. John will make a killing from the law suit and open his own publishing house launching the the Island's 2nd newspaper.

Chinaman will be the Island's doctor operating the only hospital / clinic in the place.

Homer will operate the Island's transport service - taxis, buses, trains, trams - all will be under his control. He will hire bus conductors from Northern India and give franchise licenses for other transport services to businessmen from Mumbai.

Miss Field will be the Island's nurse taking care of every soul along with Awmyth. Miss Field will also be the sole owner of the Island's cricket ground that will hold one test match per year. She will also be responsible for selecting the Island's cricket team. At the annual awards shows that she suggested, Miss Field will ofcourse play host.

We at Well Pitched will be the Island's police force, the keeper of the peace, attending all scuffles, ensuring that the love is free flowing.

Before Miriam, we will make sure that Suave's business is not hurt by the fishermen and that he doesn't steal too many cows from AYALAC. We will also ensure that Uncle J doesn't transmit sexplicit stuff in between cartoons for the kids.

We will make sure that we serve all of you and keep working towards your best interests and that of the Island.

Cricket Bloggers. Welcome to your Island.

You may pledge your contribution here or over at Miss Field's.
