Memorable Independence Days for Pakistan Cricket

1954, 12th-17th August

Pakistan beat England in a test match at the Oval; their first ever victory on English soil.

1974, 31st August

Pakistan won their first ever ODI; it was the 2nd ODI they ever played and the opposition was England.

1982, 12th-16th August

Pakistan beat England at Lord's; Mohsin Khan scored a double hundred and became only the 2nd Pakistani batsman, after Zaheer Abbas, to score a double century in England, and the first Pakistani to do so at Lord's. Mohsin Khan's 200 remained the highest score by a Pakistani at Lord's till Mohammad Yousuf overtook it in 2006.

1987, 6th-11th August

Pakistan drew with England at the Oval; Javed Miandad scored 260 and broke Zaheer Abbas' record of 240 for the highest score by a Pakistani on that ground.

1994, 9th-13th August

Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 301 runs at the PSS in Colombo, which at that time was Pakistan's largest test win in terms of runs; it remained Pakistan's biggest win by runs till they beat India by 341 in Karachi in 2006.

2002, 14th August

Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in an ODI in Morocco; it was the first ever cricket series to be played in Morocco.

2004, 21st August

Pakistan beat India in an ODI in Amstelveen, Netherlands; it was the 2nd ODI on that ground and the first played between Pakistan and India.

2006, 17th-21st August

Pakistan forfieted their test against England at the Oval, in what was the first time in test history that the opposition forfieted a test match.

2009, 12th August

Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in a Twenty20 International in Colombo; it was the first international match in which Shahid Afridi captained Pakistan.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #16

Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq hold the record for the highest partnership for the 8th wicket in test cricket.

Wasim and Saqlain put on 313 runs for the 8th wicket against Zimbabwe at Sheikhapura in 1996. That record still stands.

Wasim Akram's 257 at that time was the highest score by a Pakistani captain in tests; that record was broken by Younis Khan earlier this year.

Wasim Akram created another record during that innings; his 12 sixes remains the highest number of sixes hit in a test innings.

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #15

Kamran Akmal has more dismissals in test matches than Rashid Latif and Moin Khan.

For an average wicketkeeper, I found that quite amusing.

How has Akmal managed to surpass Rashid and Moin?

His dismissals per innings (2.05) are also higher than Moin's (1.24) and Rashid (1.88).

In fact, Kamran Akmal has more dismissal per innings than any Pakistani wicketkeeper in tests!

Figure that one out.

Imagine where that figure would be if he didn't drop all those catches, or miss all those stumpings.

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #14

Imran Khan to Inzamam: "I know that you will win us the World Cup."

True story.

Pakistan had played about a dozen warm up matches in Australia before the 1992 world cup; Inzamam Ul Haq had failed in all of them.

When members of the team and the management suggested that he was not good enough, Imran Khan maintained that, "this boy will win us the world cup."

After Pakistan's last league game against New Zealand, which was another failure for Inzamam, Imran Khan went up to Inzamam and said, "You scored only 5 but you hit 1 boundary and that was an amazing stroke. I know that you will win us the World Cup."

The rest, as we all know, is history.

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #13

3 Pakistanis have taken 4 hatricks in test matches; all have come against Sri Lanka.

Wasim Akram did so twice in consecutive test matches during the Asian Test Championship in 1999.

The first one of those I witnessed at the Gaddafi. The second one I watched live in my college dorms.

Abdul Razzaq and Mohammad Sami are the other two.

There's definitely something about Sri Lanka that Pakistan fancies; I'm not sure exactly what.

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #12

Pakistan have never lost a test series against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka; in fact Pakistan have lost only one test match in Sri Lanka.

The only time Sri Lanka have beaten Pakistan in a test match at home was over two decades ago, in 1986.

Sri Lanka have won test series against Pakistan, but they have done that in Pakistan; never at home.

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #11

Hanif Mohammad, the original "Little Master", held the record for the highest score in first class cricket for 36 years before Brian Lara overtook it.

Hanif Mohammad scored 499 for Karachi against Bahawalpur in 1958; Brian Lara went past that record by scoring his unbeaten 501 for Warwickshire against Durham in 1994.

Lara's record still stands and probably will for decades to come.

Hanif Mohammad also holds the record for the highest score by a Pakistan batsman in test cricket - 337 vs West Indies also scored in 1958.

Coincidentally, Lara also scored his 375 and 501* in the same calendar year.

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #10

In the 2003 World Cup, Shoaib Akhtar had the highest batting average of all Pakistani players (72.00), while Saeed Anwar had the highest bowling average (15.00).

Yep, it's true - just another piece of evidence for Pakistan's disastrous performance. Shoaib Akhtar's average was boosted by his short, explosive innings against England, and a few not-outs. Saeed Anwar bagged one wicket when he was asked to bowl a few overs inconsequential against Netherlands (same match in which Wasim Akram got his 500th wicket).

Here's a link to the stats.

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #9

Wasim Akram held the record for the highest score in a test innings by a Pakistan captain, before Younis Khan broke it with his 313.

Wasim Akram's unbeaten 257 against Zimbabwe in 1996 broke Saleem Malik's record of 237 against Australia, and stood as the record for over 12 years before Younis Khan went past it against Sri Lanka earlier this year.

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #8

Mohammad Aamer was 19 days away from coming into this world when Pakistan won its only World Cup title.

Today he will be trying to bowl Pakistan to another.

Wonder how he would respond to references to 1992 by Intikhab Alam.

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #7

Shahid Afridi used Sachin Tendulkar's bat to score the fastest ever hundred in one day internationals.

True story.

Afridi was flown into Kenya, where Pakistan were taking part in a quadrangular tournament, from the West Indies where he was representing Pakistan U-19.

He was summoned as a replacement for Mushtaq Ahmed, who had injured himself while in Kenya.

Yes, a replacement for a LEG SPINNER.

Afridi made his debut against Kenya and did well with his leggies conceding 32 in his 10 overs.

Saeed Anwar, who was captaining Pakistan on the tour, caught a glimpse of Afridi batting in the nets, which made Anwar send Afridi into bat as a pinch hitter in the next game against Sri Lanka.

There came the fastest ever ODI century; a record that still stands.

That knock changed Afridi's life forever as Pakistan tried to turn a leggie into an opening batsman.

As for the bat; Afridi had arrived without one from the West Indies. Waqar Younis handed him one to use that had been given to him by Sachin Tendulkar.

Some say it was a gift from Sachin; others say it was given to Waqar so he could get similar bats manufactured from Sialkot.

Whatever it was; Waqar handed the bat of the world's best batsman to Shahid Afridi, who then went on to hit 11 sixes and 6 fours on his way to 102 off 40 deliveries!

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #6

Saqlain Mushtaq is the only spinner who has picked up a hatrick in One-Day Internationals.

True story.

Besides Wasim Akram, Saqlain is also the only bowler who boasts of two hatricks in ODIs.

Both his hatricks came against Zimbabwe; at Peshawar, and then at the Oval in London.

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #5

Here's one in celebration of Razzaq's return to international cricket!

Abdul Razzaq has batted in every single position, from opener to number 11, for Pakistan in One-Day Internationals.

I don't know many others who can boast of such a feat.

Shoaib Malik comes close but he has never walked out to bat as a number 11; Razzaq has done that too!

For the record, in test matches, Razzaq has batted in all positions except 4, 10, and 11.

Where else will you find such a versatile player?

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #4

In honor of Javed Miandad's 52nd birthday on June 12th, here's a fairly well known fact about him.

Miandad is one of only two cricketers (who played 20 or more innings) whose test average never, ever dipped below 50.

Click here for Cricinfo's stats of his cumulative average.

The only other batsman to achieve this feat is Herbert Sutcliffe. Here's his cumulative average listing. Actually, Sutcliffe's average never dropped below 60!

Happy Birthday Javed!

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #3

Pakistan has never lost to Sri Lanka in a World Cup game.

Not so random, but then I thought this fact was apt for today.

Its true people; ODI World Cup, Champions Trophy, World T20, Pakistan has always had the better of Sri Lanka.

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #2

When the Pakistan squad for the 1992 World Cup was announced, there was no Javed Miandad in it.

A bad back and indifferent form had resulted in Miandad's ouster from the squad.

Salim Malik had been announced Vice Captain, while a young Aamir Sohail was Miandad's replacement.

Once Imran Khan realised that he won't be able to play the first few games, he called for Javed Miandad to join the squad in Australia.

Aamir Sohail was not replaced due to his form in the warm up matches, Mianded led Pakistan in their first few games and ended the world cup as one of the leading run scorers with over 400 runs in the competition, while the replaced Vice Captain, Salim Malik, failed miserably with the bat.

The rest, History!

Random Pakistan Cricket Fact #1

Inzamam Ul Haq took a wicket off his first delivery in One-Day Internationals.

True story.

It was Inzamam's 2nd ODI, it was against the West Indies, and the batsman he dismissed was none other than Brian Charles Lara!

Here's the scorecard of the mentioned match.

Welcome to the NEW Well Pitched

We're the same but we've made some changes. Not too many, but some changes none the less.

Welcome to the NEW Well Pitched everyone.

The major change is the addition of the "recent comments" and the "LBW" in the right-side bar, which we thought would be very useful.

Thank you Sledgehammer and Obaid for wasting those precious hours at work working on the new layout and format for Well Pitched.

It was all their doing people, I hardly have any technical know-how.

There are a few minor tweaks that Sledge and Obaid are working on and will continue to do so, but that won't hamper our daily updates.

For the rest of you, thank you for visiting, reading, commenting, arguing, discussing, recommending, analyzing, complimenting, and criticizing - it keeps us going.

Hope you all continue to do the same.

With this I leave you with a fact of the day:

"The last time Australia got knocked out of a world cup in the group stages, Pakistan won the world cup".

True story ladies and gents.

I'm not being optimistic, just stating a fact.

Thinking of that, I'm going to start a new daily feature on Well Pitched.

Taking the Q from Jrod's Ashes Facts, I will feed you all with "Pakistan Cricket Facts" on a daily basis.

Since I don't have an imagination like Jrod, these will actually be facts.

Take the above world cup one as Fact #Zero.

Let the past be the past, enjoy the new Well Pitched, forget how Pakistan messed up in the last few matches, forget what Younis Khan said, forget how pathetic Pakistan have looked on the field, and lets just support them and hope that we get through to the Super 8s tonight!
