Indian Cricket: Just Not Hungry

By Bikram Vohra

It is not that India lost to England Sunday that bugs me though I am not exactly over the moon about being kicked out of the tournament.

What is going up my nose is the attitude that the Dhoni led tigers(??????) brought to the field. They were sulky, indifferent, casual and you could visibly notice their steadfast cockiness as they tumbled in an untidy heap from the pedestal on which we, the fans, the media and the officials place them so easily…and with such total dedication. Arrogance in our cricketers is fed and nourished on a rich diet of money, money and more money not to lightly forget the drip of adulation that goes with the enormous wealth. It is such a heady mix they even forget to smile.

Did anyone see a more pathetic lot than this bunch on Sunday? Talk about putting a foot wrong, Master Yuv Raj symbolized the whole approach when he was stumped with his foot delicately poised five inches above the ground. Go man, go.

I don’t know if you watched the same match I did (hopefully technology showed a better game on LCD screens, at least skinnier despair) but I did not spot a soupcon of passion, interest in winning or commitment beyond a sort of desultory, loping romp in the park like so what’s the big deal?

There probably isn’t. When you are fat and sleek like Casca and your bank manager sucks up to you (unlike mine who just sneers) where is the hunger? There is none. That blubber covers up the desire to win, it is just another boring day at the office.

You and I both know it is not the three runs. They were never going to be covered. It could have been thirty runs, the score was academic.

We were just not in the picture. Like shy brides we did not want to be in the picture. We have so much on our minds. Like opening restaurants, starting real estate companies, investing our wealth, charging for appearances, dating film stars, oh, and occasionally strutting about the cricket field.

And now that there will be no parades and no ridiculous cavalcades (remember the horror of 2007 when we won and what they did to Mumbai?) messing up our cities and mayors and ministers, board babus and those perennial hangers on doing the dirty and disappearing what say we finally bring a little perspective into the game and wise up to the fact that we are not the bee’s knees and a little comeuppance is a healthy thing.

Actually, for a team that didn’t want to win, why should they have?

Oh India What Have You Done?

My facebook status right after the toss was, "India, I think its a mistake chasing".

No matter how good one is at chasing, I believe in crunch games, chasing can be very very hard. Even if the total is not that big; the pressure is just too much for the batsmen.

Besides the call at the toss, I think Dhoni and the team management made a couple of other big mistakes as well.

Firstly the fact that Pragyan Ojha did not play. Why did they drop one of their best bowlers?

To be fair, Harbajhan and Jadeja did a brilliant job with the ball; but surely in a do-or-die game you just have to take your best players in!

Secondly, and not for the first time, India got their batting order all wrong.

So far Dhoni had made the mistake of coming out at number 3 himself. When I understood that the strategy was Dhoni at 3 for Gambhir, and Raina at 3 for Rohit, it made sense to me.

A dasher and an accumulator in the middle always makes sense; it was unfortunate that Dhoni was out of form.

Considering that, it made no sense at all to send Jadeja in at 4 tonight, especially since the wickets to fall were Rohit and Raina.

With Gambhir and Jadeja in the middle, India had 2 accumulators in the middle - what happened to the strategy!?

Moreover, did the team management not watch the IPL? Jadeja batted well alright, but always too slow for the team's liking, leading to a number of failed run chases for the Rajasthan Royals.

Surely Yuvraj should have walked out when Raina fell.

And then when Jadeja finally holed out, in walked Dhoni!

Alright so the captain wanted to take responsibility; but given the form he has been in thus far, and the significantly high asking rate at the time, I believe Yusuf Pathan should have walked out.

But, credit where credit is due, England did hit the Indians where it hits hard - the short stuff.

England would have seen how the West Indian bowlers had handled the powerful Indian top order; they applied the same plan and the Indians, yet again, were found wanting.

The result - India, the defending champions, out of the ICC World Twenty20!

At the end, the difference was ONLY 3 runs!

Are you going to tell me that India would not have done it had Yuvraj walked out at 4, and/or YP before Dhoni?

Yeah I thought so.

India in Pakistan's Shoes, Sri Lanka to Increase Run Rate

With one potential knock-out game and another to get closer to the semi finals, the Super 8s of the World Twenty20 continue on yet another crucial day.

Group E: India vs England

The defending champions find themselves in exactly the same position as they were in the inaugral World T20 in 2007.

Back then, India had to beat England and South Africa (by a certain margin) to qualify for the semi finals.

This time round, they face the exact same opposition and the exact same scenario.

If India lose, their campaign will end; that would send South Africa into the semi finals and leave England to battle West Indies for the other semi final spot.

If England lose, however, they will still have a chance to qualify by beating the West Indies and hoping that South Africa beat India, which would result in net run rates coming into play.

Given that Pakistan rose to the occasion last night in a similar do-or-die situation, and considering how the neighbors have strangely followed similar patterns in ICC branded tournaments, my dollar is on India tonight.

I also owe my backing of India to good friend and fellow blogger, Ankit of All Padded Up, who sent his good vibes Pakistan's way last night, and to regular reader Raj, who has been backing Pakistan despite the Pakistanis not being behind them.

Hence, here's to India staying alive!

Not that England stood a chance anyway.

Group F: Sri Lanka vs Ireland

Going by Irelands's performances against India and New Zealand, I highly doubt that they have any surprise in store for the powerful Sri Lankans.

Sri Lanka though, should not be taking this match easily.

There is a high chance that net run rates can come into play if they lose to New Zealand, hence they should be looking to beat Ireland by a healthy margin to keep their NRR above New Zealand's and Pakistan's.

For Pakistan's sake though, I hope the margin is as low as possible.
