The Pakistan Cup & how it demonstrates PCB's ineptness once again!

The PCB launched the Pakistan Cup recently, a domestic one-day competition that replaces the Pentangular Cup, with all the right buzz words like "improved product", "tougher competition", "attracting investors" and so on.

The Pakistan Cup will be contested by 5 regions - Punjab, Sindh, KPK, Balochistan, and Federal, which will be captained by Shoaib Malik, Sarfraz Ahmed, Younis Khan, Azhar Ali, and Misbah Ul Haq respectively.

Yesterday, the PCB conducted a draft for the selection of the 15-man squads for each of the teams. We have heard of player auctions for domestic T20 leagues, and we even witnessed a first ever player draft on the lines of the NBA two months ago for the Pakistan Super League. However, for a one-day competition, this was a first.

Full marks for being innovative!

The draft began with a list of around 170 cricketers that the regions could select from. Besides selecting one U-19 player from their own region, there was no other criteria for selection.

Here's a list of the players that the regions had to select from.

And here are the selected squads.

All well and good?

Not at all.

So here are my issues with all of this.

1. The Captains

So it makes sense to make Azhar Ali the captain of one of the teams considering he is Pakistan's ODI captain. Makes sense to make Sarfraz captain as well considering he has just been announced captain of Pakistan's T20 team and is also the Vice Captain of the ODI team.

But the other three captains do not make sense at all.

Misbah and Younis have long retired from ODIs, while Shoaib Malik is in the final few years of his career.

The PCB missed a golden opportunity of providing captaincy experience to future prospective leaders. At a time when the national team has a dearth of leaders this was the perfect chance to test the captaincy skills of some players and even groom some of them.

I can understand the presence of Misbah and Younis in the squads despite their ODI retirements. They are senior players and will bring in plenty of wisdom to the dressing room that other players can draw upon and learn from. However, having them captain the teams serves no purpose. Another player with the reigns, coupled with the opportunity to bank on advice from senior pros, would have provided for a great learning opportunity.

Imad Wasim, a former U19 captain and Asad Shafiq are just two examples of players who could have benefited from such an approach.

But then again, we know that the PCB has no vision for the future!

2. The U19 Selections

WHERE IS HASAN MOHSIN?

Anyone who watched the U19 World Cup earlier this year (each one of the PCB members and selectors should have been watching it) must have seen Hasan Mohsin. The way the kid batted must have put some of the senior players to shame!

He was Pakistan's leading run scorer and leading wicket taker in the U19 World Cup.

AND HE WAS NOT SELECTED BY ANY REGION!

There has been a lot of hoopla regarding the selection of Arsal Shaikh by the Federal region and the consequent disappointment of Misbah. For those who are unaware, Arsal is the son of Shakeel Shaikh who is a member of the Governing Board of the PCB. He is also the head of PCB's cricket committee and was the head of the recent committee formed to investigate the humiliation at the World T20.

So that is the only claim to fame for Arsal Shaikh as his performance is shit. What was the basis of his selection? We all know the answer don't we.

3. The Other Selections

I have no idea what the criteria was for the pool of 170 odd cricketers or for the 15 selected by each region. It does not seem like performance was given any due weightage. Rather the captains / regions just selected players they were comfortable with.

This is why I think so:

Usman Salahuddin
He was part of the pool of 170 but not selected by any region.
Anyone know why?

In the National One-Day Cup that was played in December 2015 he was the 4th highest run scorer with 469 runs in 7 innings at an average of 93.80 and a strike rate of 84.5. He knocked 2 centuries and 2 fifties in those 7 innings.

Sadaf Hussain
He was also part of the pool of 170 but not selected by any region.

In the National One-Day Cup he was the highest wicket taker with 20 wickets at an ave of 16.55 and an economy of 4.58. In the Quaid-e-Azam trophy he took 36 wickets at an average of 19.55.

His domestic record is for everyone to see and why he has never got a chance to play for Pakistan or in the premier domestic tournaments, I will never understand.

Saeed Anwar
He was also part of the pool of 170 but not selected by any region.

In the National One-Day Cup he was the 5th highest run scorer with 404 runs in 8 innings at an average of 57.71 and a strike rate of 90.38. He scored 1 century and 3 fifties!

Abdul Rehman Muzammil
He was also part of the pool of 170 but not selected by any region.

In the National One-Day Cup he scored 337 runs in 5 innings at an average of 67.40 and a strike rate of 100.89. He scored 2 centuries in those 5 innings including a 159!

Raza Ali Dar
He was also part of the pool of 170 but not selected by any region.

In the National One-Day Cup he scored 293 runs in 6 innings at an average of 97.66 and a strike rate of 88.25. He scored 1 century and 2 fifties. On top of that, he also picked up 11 wickets in the competition at an average of 27.18 and had an economy of 6.1!

Faisal Iqbal
He was also part of the pool of 170 but not selected by any region.

In the National One-Day Cup he scored 265 runs in 7 innings at an average of 53.00 and a strike rate of 88.92. He scored 3 fifties in those 7 innings. Additionally, he had a fruitful Quaid-e-Azam trophy as well scoring 490 runs at an average of 49.00 including 2 centuries and 2 fifties.

*                                    *                                    *

These are just a few names of the cricketers that were ignored by the 5 regions taking part in the Pakistan Cup. As always no justification or explanation was given for the players selected or for the players that were omitted.

As always, nepotism and favoritism played a role in selecting squads. The usual suspects like the Akmal brothers, Salman Butt, Khurram Manzoor, Nasir Jamshed and many others all made it to different squads. Players who have been tried and tested and failed repeatedly are continuing to get chances to display their mediocre talents, yet other emerging and deserving cricketers sit at home and wonder what they need to do.

As always, the PCB missed a good opportunity to test some emerging players, to provide promising talent with an opportunity to play alongside and learn from more experienced international cricketers, to test leadership qualities with the aim of identifying potential future captains.

Waqar Younis' scathing report following the humiliating World T20 was there for everyone to see. The PCB made it public to embarrass Waqar. Instead all it ended up doing was, as always, embarrass itself!

The call for improving domestic cricket, the call for working with a vision for the future, the call for disciplining some of the players and providing opportunities to other emerging talent were all ignored by the PCB in its first plan, the Pakistan Cup, following the report.

Pathetic as always.

How can Pakistan cricket ever improve?

Its time for Haris Sohail

Two years ago Pakistan's selectors put their faith in two young batsmen who had been scoring heavily in domestic cricket.

Today, both these batsman - Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq - are a permanent feature of Pakistan's test team and have become vital cogs in a strong middle order for Pakistan. They have adequately fit into a middle order that was looking bleak without Inzamam Ul Haq and Mohammad Yousuf.

I believe that now is the time for another young batsman to be selected.

It is time to bring Haris Sohail into the national team fold.

The 23 year old left handed batsman from Sialkot made his first class debut in 2007 as an 18 year old, but he shot to prominence during the 2010-11 season when he amassed 653 runs in 11 matches at an average of 54.4 in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy where he was representing Zarai Taraqiati Bank Ltd.

His tally included 5 fifties and a century - an unbeaten 211, his highest first class score.

Haris Sohail continued his good form in the following season (2011-12) where he was the 4th highest run scorer in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy with 873 runs in 11 matches at an average of 51.4. He smashed 4 centuries that season along with 4 fifties.

During the same season, Haris was also one of the leading run scorers in the Pentangular Cup where he represented Punjab and smashed 311 runs in 5 matches at an average of 44.4 scoring 1 century and 1 fifty in the process.

Haris has been exceptional this season as well. In the on going President's Trophy, Haris knocked his 3rd successive century. He missed the first 3 games of the season as he was away for the Champions League and the on personal leave, but since his return in the game against WAPDA, Haris has been in super form.

In the 6 innings that Haris has played in the President's Trophy thus far, he has scores of 115*, 58*, 3, 117*, 120, and 5.

Haris was selected for Pakistan's tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year but didn't get a chance to play for Pakistan. That at least shows that he is in the selectors' minds.

However, I think its time that he is thought of as a long term feature in Paksitan's middle order and potentially the long term replacement for Misbah or Younis Khan.

It will be difficult for him to break into the test team while both Misbah and Younis are around, though he can benefit plenty by being around the team as part of the squad on the tours to India and South Africa.

His time is now and the selectors will do well by picking him first for the ODIs against India and then for the test tour to South African early next year.

Pakistan Nationals Light Up President's Trophy

The President's Trophy continued this week with some exciting games and good work outs for Pakistan's national team cricketers. With no international cricket being played, this season's President's Trophy has been set alight with the presence of all the national stars.

Habib Bank's First Loss

Habib Bank fell from the number 1 spot for the first time this season as PIA ended their winning streak this week. PIA's victory came on the back of a big performance from Shoaib Malik who followed up his first innings 56 with an unbeaten 94 in the second innings to help PIA chase 176 and win the game by 6 wickets.

Aizaz Cheema continued his good form with the ball picking up 7 wickets in the match including the wicket of Younis Khan in both innings. A rare twin failure by Younis Khan meant that Habib Bank could manage only 200 and 147 in their two innings.

Habib Bank's rare failure allowed Sui Gas to take the lead in the table and they now sit at number 1 with a 3 point lead over HBL.

Sui Gas at the Top of the Table

Sui Gas crushed ZTBL by 186 runs as Pakistan skipper Misbah Ul Haq, Azhar Ali, Taufeeq Umar all returned to form at the same time. The three had had an atrocious run this season so far, but in this week's game against ZTBL, which included Sohail Tanvir, Mohammad Khalil, and Abdul Razzaq, the Pakistan trio put on their best show.

Misbah's 110 in the first innings allowed Sui Gas to put up a fighting total of 250 after they were reeling at 63-3. And then Azhar Ali's second innings unbeaten 129, during which he was involved in a 153 run partnership with Taufeeq Umar who scored 80, enabled Sui Gas to set ZTBL a daunting target of 408.

Abdul Razzaq's good form with the ball also continued as he picked up 6 wickets in the first innings that helped restrict Sui Gas to 250; but the effort was not enough to avoid a crushing defeat. Nor was Haaris Sohail's well made century in the second innings. Haaris, who should be in the national selectors' thoughts for future tours, remained unbeaten 117 as ZTBL were bowled out for 221.

Samiullah Khan Niazi, who had been on the fringes of Pakistan's national team for some time picked up 10 wickets for Sui Gas, with his first innings 6 resulting in ZTBL collapsing for a first innings 99.

National Bank Finally Win

National Bank of Pakistan, who have a star studded batting line up with Nasir Jamshed, Sami Aslam, Fawad Alam, Kamran Akmal, and Hammad Azam finally won their first game of the President's Trophy as they won a closely fought encounter against Port Qasim by 2 wickets.

NBP were able to fight off a super performance from Tanvir Ahmed whose 12 wickets for Port Qasim were not enough to avoid a close defeat after they had set NBP a target of 211. Fawad Alam had a rare failure in both innings in a game that was dominated by the bowlers.

Imran Khan, the 25 year old medium fast bowler from Peshawar picked up 6 wickets to restrict Port Qasim to 150 in the first innings. His effort was bettered by Tanvir Ahmed who picked up 7 wickets and restricted NBP to only 117. Then it was the turn of Silakot's Umaid Asif who picked up 5 wickets and bowled Port Wasim out for 177 in their 2nd innings. Tanvir's 5 wicket haul was not enough to restrict NBP who scraped home by 2 wickets to finally notch up a win.

In other games this week KRL and State Bank played out a draw, while Wapda crushed UBL by an innings.

The President's Trophy continues next week.

A Round Up of Pakistan's Domestic Season

It has been 3 weeks since Pakistan's domestic season got underway with the President's Trophy First Class competition that involves 10 department teams.

HBL, UBL, PIA, SBP, NBP, KRL, SNGPL, WAPDA, Port Qasim, and ZTBL have been engaged in this departmental tournament and all of Pakistan's test cricketers have been involved thus far.

Habib Bank, who are being captained by Younis Khan, are sitting at the top of the table currently with 3 wins out of 3 thus far; while PIA, Sui Gas, and State Bank follow with 2 wins each in their 3 matches.

Fawad Alam, who is captaining Natonal Bank of Pakistan, is the leading run scorer thus far, with 361 runs in 6 innings. He has already knocked two centuries and one fifty, and is looking in sublime form, just like he does in every domestic season.

It is quite unbelievable that a player like him who averages 58 in first class cricket, which is more than most Pakistan cricketers of the past and present, and who scored a debut test century, has had only 3 test caps.

Younis Khan is also looking in good touch with the only two innings that he has played producing a 48 and an unbeaten 101. He was on 101 overnight in HBL's match against SBP that started yesterday.

The SNGPL top 5 could very well be Pakistan's test line up with Hafeez, Taufeeq Umar, Azhar Ali, Umar Akmal, and Misbah

Mohammad Hafeez has had a decent run as well with 227 runs in 5 innings at an average of 45.4, while Umar Akmal has had two knocks of 48 and 40.

But the other three - Misbah, Taufeeq Umar, and Azhar Ali have had a torrid time at the crease. Pakistan test captain Misbah has managed only 53 runs in 5 innings, while Taufeeq and Azhar Ali have managed 129 and 158 in 8 innings respectively.

Among the bowlers, Habib Bank's Ehsan Adil is the leading wicket taker currently with 25 wickets in 4* matches. Ehsan is only 19 years old and is in his debut first class season. He was also a part of Pakistan's U19 World Cup campaign a couple of months ago.

Aizaz Cheema has also been in fine form with the ball picking up 21 wickets in 4* games, while two slow left arm spinners - veterans Kashif Bhatti of UBL and Zulfiqar Babar of WAPDA have picked up 23 wickets apiece.

With no international tours over the next 2 months for Pakistan, all the test players are involved in this President's Cup, which will make the upcoming weeks even more exciting.

My bets are on Habib Bank to continue their winning ways and remain at the top of the table. If you are looking to be in sports, click here for the best betting sites.

Stay tuned for more updates as another week of the President's Cup unfolds.

Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup: Shehzad Belligerent Knock Maintains Lions' Unbeaten Record

Ahmed Shehzad's 78 off 49 deliveries ensured that the Lahore Lions made it to the semi finals of the Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup unbeaten as they defeated Hyderabad Hawks by 8 runs in their final league game.

Shehzad smashed 3 sixes and 8 boundaries and his dominant innings was enough for the Lions to post a match winning 160-9 in 20 overs.

The T20 tournament is now in the knock out stages with the Lions taking on the Rams, and the Stallions taking on the Dolphins in the semi finals to be played tomorrow.

This sets up a potential mouth watering final between the Lahore Lions and the Karachi Dolphins on Friday.

Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup: Shahzaib, Latif take Dolphins to the Semis

The Karachi Dolphins demolished the Faisalabad Wolves today by a whopping 124 runs to become the first team to qualify for the Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup Semi Finals.

The Dolphins' posted a daunting total of 231-7 in 20 overs with Shahzaib Hasan ripping the heart out of the Wolves' bowling with a whirlwind knock of 69 off only 28 deliveries. Shahzaib's innings included 4 sizes and 8 boundaries, and he was involved in a 90 run opening partnership with Asad Shafiq (27 off 22) in a mere 6.4 overs.

Khalid Latif then took up the charge from where Shahzaib left as he smashed 46 runs off 26 deliveries with the help of 5 sixes and a boundary.

Late lusty blows from Sarfraz Ahmed and Mohammad Sami ensured that the Dolphins reached well beyond 200, a total that proved too much for the Wolves.

None of the Wolves' batsmen could post a significant score and they folded for 107 in only 13.3overs.

Pakistan discard Sohail Khan was the pick of the bowlers for the Dolphins picking up 3-32 including the prized scalp of Pakistan skipper Misbah Ul Haq.

The Dolphins ended the league stage at the top of Group B and now await the results of Group A tomorrow to see who they face in the semi finals.

Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup: 19 Year Old Multan Boy, Zain Abbas, Rocks the Dolphins

Youngsters continue to shine in the on going Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup, with yet another power packed performance by Zain Abbas in Multan Tigers' upset win over the Karachi Dolphins today.

Zain, who made his T20 debut two days ago in the Tigers' game against the Wolves, smashed an international calibre attack for an impressive 85 runs off 65 deliveries, leading the Tigers to a match winning total of 161 off 20 overs.

The Dolphins, whose pace attack included internationals Tanvir Ahmed, Mohammad Sami, and Sohail Khan had no answer to Zain's attack as his onslaught comprised of 3 sixes and 10 hits to the fence.

Zain score more than half the Tigers runs, which proved to be more than enough for a 14 run win.

Despite their batting line up including a number of internationals such as Shahzaib Hasan, Khalid Latif, Asad Shafiq, and Fawad Alam, the Dolphins could not over haul the Tigers score.

Zain, who has so far opened in all his domestic innings, made his first class debut this season for Baluchistan and has so far impressed with two half centuries in 4 innings.

His List A performance has been even more impressive with a century and 3 half centuries in 5 innings.

Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup: Pakistan Internationals Lead the Lions' Demolition of the Stallions

Pakistan's former openers shone on the 2nd day of the Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup in Faisalabad today in a high scoring match between the Lahore Lions and Sialkot Stallions.

Batting first, the Lahore Lions reached a daunting score of 218 in their allotted 20 overs with openers Ahmed Shehzad and Nasir Jamshed involved in a 128 run partnership in only 10.1 overs.

Shehzad dominated the Stallions throughout his innings scoring 74 off 47 deliveries with 2 sixes and 11 boundaries. Nasir was just as brutal smashing 55 off only 27 deliveries with 3 sixes and 5 fours.

Following the scathing attack by Shehzad and Nasir, Umar Akmal took charge with an unbeaten knock of 43 off 23 deliveries with 2 sixes and 4 fours.

The Lions captain, Mohammad Yousuf could manage only 13, despite a six and a four in his innings.

The target of 219 was too much for the Stallions, even though their opener Imran Nazir gave them a flying start with smashing innings of 44 that included 5 sixes!

The other big names in the Stallions - Shoaib Malik, Shahid Yousuf, and Shehzad Malik - could not manage much with the bat. Only a face saving innings of 67 from former U-19 player Ali Khan enabled the Stallions to reach 173 in 20 overs.

Ali's innings included 6 sixes, which was another strong performance from a young player looking to break into the senior team.

Ali has been around the domestic scene for 4 years now and has an impressive record in List A and T20 games. He has also been a part of a successful Pakistan U-19 team in the past.

Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup: Another Youngster, Sharjeel Khan lead Hawks to Thrilling Victory

After the impressive performances of Asif Ali and Hasan Mahmood on the opening day of the Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup, another youngster, Sharjeel Khan from Hyderabad, impressed the selectors today with a whirlwind knock of 61 from 33 deliveries that led the Hyderabad Hawks to a 3 wicket victory over the Islamabad Leopards.

The 21 year old opener smashed 5 sixes and 5 fours to give the Hawks a flying start that set the platform for their win.

Sharjeel made his First Class debut for Hyderabad in 2009 and in 19 first class games has already notched up 4 centuries in addition to 2 centuries in 12 List A games.

Batting first, the Leopards scored 164 before they were bowled out in the final over of their innings. The Hawks reached their target with 5 balls to spare.

Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup: Youngsters Shine on Debut in Wolves win over Tigers

The Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Cup got underway today in Faisalabad with the home team Faisalabad Wolves taking on the Multan Tigers in the first game of the tournament.

The match was an easy win for the Wolves who marched to victory by 69 runs on the back of two power packed performances by Asif Ali and Hasan Mahmood.

Asif Ali is a 19 year old right hand batsman who made his first class debut for Faisalabad just last December. He has played only 3 first class matches and 5 List A games; while today was his first ever T20 game.

Asif could not have asked for a better start to his T20 career.

He walked out to the crease on the 2nd ball of the match, after Abdur Rauf removed Pakistan international Mohammad Hafeez on the 1st ball of the innings.

Asif did not look back after that. With the held of 7 sixes and 9 boundaries, Asif Ali scored an exact 100 off a mere 59 deliveries, helping the Wolves to a total of 199 in 20 overs.

Pakistan captain Misbah also played some powerful strokes in his unbeaten 32 off 21 deliveries.

In response, the Tigers could only manage 130 as Hasan Mahmood, the 20 year old left arm spinner destroyed their middle order with 5 wickets. Hasan ended the game with figures of 5-23.

Like Asif, Hasan was also playing his first ever T20 game.

Hasan has had an impactful domestic season for Faisalabad this year with two 5 wicket hauls in first class games, and one in a List A game.

Mohsin Khan had said that he would be closely following players performances during the Faysal Bank T20 Cup; Asif and Hasan could not have chosen a better platform to display their prowess with bat and ball respectively.

Do You Know Umar Akmal?

The name will tell you that he is Kamran Akmal's brother.

He's the youngest of 3 cricket playing brothers; however, unlike the elder two, Kamran and Adnan, he is not a wicketkeeper.

He is a batsman and he can definitely bat.

Umar Akmal made his first-class debut in 2007 and made headlines in his first domestic season when he ended the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy as the 3rd highest run scorer.

He amassed 855 runs in 14 innings, but what caught everyone's eye was the manner in which those runs came - at a strike rate of over 90!

He first made waves when he followed up some well made half centuries with a whirlwind knock of 248 against Karachi Blues in the latter half of the first-class competition in 2007.

Umar ended his campaign that season with another belligerent knock of 186, also at better than a run-a-ball.

He had a below par U-19 World Cup for Pakistan last year but he was back to his best when Pakistan's domestic season started in 2008.

The reason why I am briefing you all on him is that Umar Akmal scored his 4th first-class century last night against Australia A in the 1st test that ended in a draw.

Many in Pakistan have predicted big things for Umar, claiming that he is the best batsman among the 3 brothers.

His first-class record suggests the same, but whether he will be able to take the next step into international cricket or not depends on how he continues his good run.

Umar's stint with Pakistan A down under will definitely do him good and help him further prove his credentials.

Many claim that his big runs in Pakistan's domestic circuit have come against below average bowling.

Well last night he notched up an unbeaten 100 against a more than decent attack including Doug Bollinger, Jason Krejza, and Clint McKay.

One for the future I reckon.

Fawad Alam Could Finally Get a Game!

If this news report from Zee is to be believed, Pakistan's team management has been shaken up and has started to think.

Shocking!

They should have done the thinking before embarking that plane to England.

"It is just the start and the players just reached England on Sunday, so they are acclimatising to the conditions. There is no panic but definitely now the option of playing Akmal as an opener and bringing in Fawad Alam in the late order is under consideration" sources in the team told reporters.

I wonder who these sources are.

I heard Intikhab Alam mention the "acclimatising to the conditions" comment and that the players were a bit rusty because they had just arrived in England, but in that same press conference, Intikhab talked of the importance of using regular openers.

So I'm not sure who is thinking of the option to open with Akmal and bringing in Fawad Alam.

Whoever it is, he's some smart ass who needs to be listened to.

I have been talking about including Fawad Alam in the middle order since I don't even remember when.

Fawad is no doubt one of the most talented batsmen in Pakistan who has season after season proven his credential at the domestic level.

With Younis, Misbah, and Malik not in the best of forms, its high time Fawad comes into the mix.

And I hope that this thought is not only under consideration but actually implemented as well; starting with the warm up game against India.

The same source according to the Zee report also said, "The positive thing about playing Fawad at number six or seven is that it adds depth to the batting as he is a reliable and sticky player in any form of the game and he also adds more options to the bowling."

Well about bloody time they realised that!

Getting to know the Pak Rookies

Pakistan's squad for the ICC World Twenty20 includes 3 guys who are yet to turn 20. Pakistan is known for throwing the kids at the deep end and they've done no different this time as well.

Here's a look at who these boys are and what they've done to deserve their chance to play for Pakistan.

Ahmed Shehzad
(Right hand opening batsman, Age: 17)

Ahmed made heads turn in his debut season for the Pakistan Under-19s, when as a 15 year old opener he smashed century after century in youth tests and ODIs against England, Australia, and Bangladesh.

He had already made his first class debut for Lahore before he played for the u-19 team.

Ahmed had a couple of good domestic seasons for Lahore and Habib Bank, before his century in a tour game against the visiting Sri Lankans got him the nod from the selectors for Pakistan's test squad.

He didn't play against the Lankans, but he made his Pakistan debut in the UAE in the 2nd ODI against Australia.

If it wasn't for Nasir Jamshed's groin injury, Ahmed would not have had an opportunity, but he grabbed it with both hands when he got it and impressed with a couple of 40s.

He's technically correct and has an aggressive streak in him, but he's more in the Aamir Sohail mould than the Saeed Anwar one. I reckon he's a better bet for test matches, maybe even in ODIs, but not for T20s.

Shahzaib Hasan
(Right hand opening batsman, Age: 19)

Shahzaib is a rookie in the true sense of the word. He made his first class debut 5 months ago, while he played his first ever T20 match 7 months ago.

Since then he has played another 3 T20 matches and has a total of 138 runs in 4 innings at a healthy average of 34.50. He scored a 48 ball 56 in his last T20 innings for the Karachi Zebras in the recently concluded RBS 20-20 Cup.

Not many in Pakistan had heard about this Karachi boy, but Younis Khan was impressed by his strokeplay that he displayed, first in his maiden first class ton, and then in his maiden List A 100 earlier this year.

Shahzaib's inclusion in the world t20 squad was at Younis Khan's insistence and Younis has claimed that he has the ability to take apart any attack in the world.

That is some confidence that the Pakistan skipper has in this boy.

The boy himself doesn't know if he will get his chance, but if he does, he says he will be looking to emulate his hero - Virender Sehwag!

Mohammad Aamer
(Left arm pace bowler, Age: 17)

Aamer was first heard of in Pakistan during the summer of 2007, after a fast bowler's training camp, which was held in Lahore and overseen by Wasim Akram.

On the conclusion of the camp, Wasim Akram spoke highly of Mohammad Aamer and told Pakistan and the world that a 15 year old left arm pacer was one for the future for Pakistan.

Aamer did not make his first class and twenty20 debut till a year and a half later, but since then he has not looked back. His figures make for an impressive reading:

First Class: 10 matches, 56 wickets at 15.26, SR 29.3
List A: 15 matches, 25 wickets at 23.52, Econ 4.18, SR 33.7
T20: 5 matches, 8 wickets at 16.12, Econ 6.5

Aamer has impressed one and all with his pace and swing and word is that Pakistan is confident that he will trouble most of the batsmen in English conditions.

Out of all the rookies, Aamer is the most promising one who also seems to be the answer to Pakistan's fast bowling resources, which many claim are drying up.

Pakistan has gambled with 3 very inexperienced but talented boys for a world cup; we'll just have to wait and see if they can repay that faith in them.

PIA make it 17 as Pakistan's Internationals get Good Outings

Before this RBS Cup got underway, PIA and Habib Bank were tied on a record 16 national one day titles.

Today, PIA went one up.

They beat the favorites National Bank of Pakistan by 59 runs to clinch their 17th record one day title.

Batting first, PIA posted 315 on the back of Shoaib Malik's explosive 96 of 80 deliveries and Yasir Hameed's 91.

Sarfraz Ahmed, the benched keeper gave PIA a flying start with a 40 ball 56.

In response NBP could manage only 256 as their attacking opening pair of Salman Butt and Nasir Jamshed failed to get going.

A 4th wicket stand of 132 between Umar Amin (68) and Fawad Alam (74) threatened PIA but Aizaz Cheema's medium pace won the day for the champs as he finished with figures of 5-37 off 9 overs.

With the one-day cup over and a few good performances on display, it gives Pakistan a good platform to select the squad for the ODIs against Australia.

All of Pakistan's international stars were in good form throughout the competition.

Younis Khan - 299 runs in 5 innings at 99.67 with 1 fifty and a century.

Salman Butt - 505 runs in 7 innings at 126.25 with 1 fifty and 3 centuries.

Shoaib Malik - 241 runs in 6 innings at 48.20 with 2 fifties.

Misbah Ul Haq - 172 runs in 4 innings at 57.33 with 2 fifties.

Shahid Afridi - 167 runs in 5 innings at 41.75 with 2 fifties. Strike Rate? 133.60 - what else could you expect?

The bowling remains a worry as none of Pakistan's frontline pacers had a good outing while the likes of Uzair Ul Haq, Tariq Haroon, Asad Ali, Mohammad Aamer, and Mohammad Sami (The ICL Rebel) had very good tournaments.

Umar Gul, Sohail Tanvir, and Iftikhar Anjum were largely listless or absent.

Shoaib Akhtar turned up for a few matches for KRL and bowled economically without making much of an impact.

Shahid Afridi was his usual self picking up 7 wickets at 22.00 in 5 outings.

The fringe batsmen also impressed during the competition with Khalid Latif seriously pressing his claims to that 1 opening slot, which thus far has been filled by Khurram Manzoor or Nasir Jamshed.

Khalid Latif was the 2nd highest run scorer with 455 runs in 5 innings with 3 centuries including the record breaking 204*.

Khurram Manzoor did his chances no harm by scoring 246 runs in 6 innings with 3 fifties.

Nasir Jamshed had a poor tournament though managing only 153 runs in 7 innings.

Fawad Alam continued his awesome domestic run that has lasted for almost 5 years now, with his 246 runs coming at 46.40 with the help of 3 fifties.

While Sarfraz Ahmed displayed his batting prowess opening the innings for PIA in the competition and scoring 251 runs at an average of 50.20 and a strike rate of 125.20! His 6 innings included 4 fifties.

Opener and a keeper and a better balanced ODI XI?

The selectors have a task on their hands.

RBS Cup Final

A number of international players as well as future prospects will be on show when PIA, who have won the National One Day Championship for a record 16 times, faces National Bank of Pakistan in the final the RBS Cup.

It will be some sight when Shoaib Malik (PIA) and Kamran Akmal (NBP) walk out for the toss tomorrow.

Shoaib Malik has with him the likes of Khurram Manzoor, Yasir Hameed, Sarfraz Ahmed, Najaf Shah, Anwar Ali, and Fazl-e-Akbar.

While Kamran Akmal will be leading Salman Butt, Nasir Jamshed, Fawad Alam, Umar Amin, Wahab Riaz, and the future of Pakistan's pace attack - Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Talha.

Both PIA and NBP cruised through the group stages winning all but one of their matches and easily getting past the Mutlan Tigers and Lahore Lions in the semis respectively.

Salman Butt has been in fine form for NBP during the competition and is also the leading run scorer with 497 runs in 6 innings with 3 fifties and an unbeaten 150.

While Uzair Haq of NBP, a 22 year old pacer playing his 2nd season of List A cricket, is the leading wicket taker of the competition with 15 wickets in 6 matches.

While for PIA its been Khurram Manzoor, Yasir Hameed, and Sarfraz Ahmed who have been in good touch throughout the tournament.

On current form I would tip NBP to win the RBS Cup, but when it comes to domestic titles Shoaib Malik has had a lot of luck lately.

Should be an interesting game tomorrow.

RBS Cup Round Up

Pakistan's domestic ond day competition, the Royal Bank of Scotland Cup, started a week ago in various centres around the country.

I haven't been able to cover the competition till now, besides Khalid Latif's awesome double ton, but have got enough info now from different places to update you guys.

Captaincy Musical Chairs

The tournament began with some confusion regarding the captain of a couple of teams.

When the squads were announced for PIA and Habib Bank, the 2 leading teams in Pakistan's domestic one-day history with 13 titles each, Shoaib Malik and Younis Khan were slated to captain them, respectively.

Shoaib Malik declined to captain PIA and the next day it was announced that Faisal Iqbal would captain the team.

However, when their first match against KRL took place, it was in fact Shoaib Malik who led the team.

While Younis Khan was supposed to captain Habib Bank, in their first match against WAPDA, Younis asked Shahid Afridi to lead the team.

So the former Pakistan captain is leading his side, but the current Pakistan captain is not.

Strangeness.

ICL Returnees

The RBS Cup is also the first domestic outing for Pakistan's ICL recruits with a number of them returning to their domestic teams, while others joining new departments.

Mohammad Yousuf was roped in to captain WAPDA and failed in his first domestic match in over a year as he was dismissed by Afridi for only 5.

Rana Naveed, Shabbir Ahmed, and Shahid Yousuf also turned out for WAPDA under Mohammad Yousuf.

They might as well have been called the Lahore Badshahs!

While Imran Farhat, Hasan Raza, and Humayun Farhat turned out for Habib Bank, whom they have played for since their first class debuts.

All 7 ICL returnees turned out in the same match as Habib Bank took on WAPDA.

Abdul Razzak made a succesful return to domestic cricket while leading his team, ZTBL, to a comfortable victory over Pak Customs.

Razzak, who is captaining ZTBL, first bowled a good spell with figures of 1-46 and then smashed an unbeaten 60 off 47 deliveries to complete their chase with over 11 overs to spare.

Mohammad Sami returned to his home team, the Karachi Dolphins, and had an immediate impact with figures of 4-50 in his first game against Abbotabad.

Current Standings

The 20 teams - 12 regions and 8 departments have been divided into 4 groups.

Multan Tigers, who besides Abdur Rauf have no big name in their line up, are leading Group A; having won all their 4 matches thus far.

Islamabad Leopards and Faisalabad Wolves, with 1 win each, are jointly at the top of group B, with the Leopards slightly ahead on NRR.

PIA and ZTBL are leading Group C with PIA ahead on NRR.

While Habib Bank, Lahore Eagles, and National Bank are on top in Group D having won their only match in the competition this far. Habib Bank is ahead on NRR.

Punjab Stallions March On

Shoaib Malik led the Stallions to their 2nd win in as many matches as they beat the NWFP Panthers by 17 runs in a low scoring affair on the 3rd day of the RBS One-Day Pentangular Cup.

After his match winning effort on day 1 of the tournament, Malik put in another allround effort with a score of 42 and bowling figures of 2-38 that led his team to a narrow win.

Two in two for the Pakistan captain - wins and allround performances.

For a change his bowling is winning matches this time.

He was instrumental in initiating the collapse picking up Yasir Hameed (57) and Khurram Shehzad (32) in the same over that resulted in the Panthers sliding from 142-2 to 212 all out.

The Stallions' spinners, Malik, Rahman, and Mansoor, were at the fore again picking up 4 wickets between them while giving away only 98 runs in 28 overs between them.

The other night against the Leopards they had picked up 7-119 in 24.

Brief Scores:

Punjab Stallions 229 all out in 50 overs (Mansoor Amjad 44, Shoaib Malik 42, Samiullah Khan 3-39, Shakeel Rehman 3-23) beat NWFP Panthers 212 all out (Yasir Hameed 57, Rafatullah Mohmand 45, Shoaib Malik 2-38, Mohd. Talha 2-53) by 17 runs.

RBS Pentangular One-Day Competition: Shoaib Malik Leads from the Front

By this time last year, Pakistan had played the South Africans at home and toured India, but the start of the 2008-09 cricket season has been very different with no home series held and only a 20-20 tournament and an ODI series played at offshore venues.

The lack of international cricket at home has allowed the board to slightly modify their domestic cricket season.

It could have been done in a better way but whats panned out this season has been very different from the previous seasons in Pakistan and is definitely a step in the right direction.

The season kicked off with the RBS 20-20 Competition, which was battled by 13 regional teams, and won by the Sialkot Stallions for the 3rd time in a row.

That was followed by the RBS Pentangular Cup, the 4-day competition that involved the 5 regions of Pakistan, and was won by NWFP - their first domestic title ever.

These tournaments are now followed by the RBS Pentangular One-Day Cup.

The same 5 regions that were involved in the first class Pentangular Cup are competing in the One-Day version of the tournament that is being held for the first time in Pakistan.

Previously the one-day competitions have involved the 13 regional teams, but having one comprising of the 5 regions makes it more competitive.

The teams taking part are:

Punjab Stallions captained by Shoaib Malik.
Sindh Dolphins captained by Shahid Afridi.
Baluchistan Bears captained by Misbah Ul Haq.
Federal Areas Leopards captained by Shoaib Akhtar.
NWFP Panthers captained by Umar Gul.

The tournament kicked off last night with the Stallions marching to a 98 run victory over the Leopards.

Batting first, the Stallions put up a score of 305-8 in their 50 overs. Shoaib Malik top scored with 86 off 60 deliveries after the openers Salman Butt (39) and Azhar Ali (75) had put on 91 in quick time.

Nasir Jamshed, returning to cricket after a lay-off due to malaria looked in fine form scoring a quick fire 40.

Sohail Tanvir was the pick of the bowlers for the Leopards picking up 4 wickets, while skipper Shoaib Akhtar picked up 2 wickets.

In response to that Stallions' tall order, the Leopards' batsmen folded for 207 in 43 overs.

U-19 pacer Mohammad Talha started the slide picking up 2 wickets in his opening spell, while the spinners Malik, Abdur Rehman, and Mansoor Amjad shared 7 wickets between them routing the Leopards by 98 runs.

Shoaib Malik was declared man of the match for his allround effort of 86 and 2-51.

Cricketers take charge in Pakistan

All of a sudden it seems that former test cricketers are finally getting together to run cricket in Pakistan.

Better them than the bureaucratic administrators who had been doing the job thus far.

While Intikhab Alam and Ijaz Ahmed will get together to watch the Pentangular Cup match (read: Shoaib Akhtar) between Punjab vs Federal Areas match in Islamabad from Friday, a host of former cricketers have been invited by law minister Farooq Naek on Saturday to join the 15-member committee that is reviewing the constitution of the PCB.

Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Saleem Malik, and Rameez Raja have been included in the existing committee, which also includes Najamuddin Khan, who as Sports Minister had tried to nominate himself as the PCB Chairman before Ijaz Butt was nominated by Zardari.

Farooq Naek is the Chairman of the committee, while Shoaib Malik and Misbah-Ul-Haq have been its members since it was formed.

So my question - what happens to Ijaz Butt once the constitution has been reviewed? What if the committee decides that the Chairman should be elected through a democratic process involving the state associations?

If the committee is serious about improving the constitution then Ijaz Butt's appointment seems to be an interim one as further changes can be expected when the new constitution is put into place.

But then this could very well be a dragged and long drawn process - it took this constitution 8 years to get drafted!

So how long it will take the new one and how many Chairman the PCB will have during this time is something I don't even want to think about.

Though I hope that Farooq Naek and his committee are more serious than the previous men who have tried to do the same.

I've heard that this committee has been reviewing the constitutions of the cricket boards in India, Australia, and South Africa in order to gain ideas on improving the PCB's constitution.

This committee is also trying to come up with idea on how to restructure domestic cricket in Pakistan.

Hence the inclusion of Miandad, Wasim, Malik, and Rameez makes sense. But why not Imran Khan who has been talking about changing the domestic structure for the last 4 decades?

Will these men be able to change what has been there for as long as cricket has existed in Pakistan?

Including making Shoaib Akhtar perform without breaking down?

Shoaib Malik makes it 3 in a row for the Stallions

The Sialkot Stallions completed a hatrick of domestic 20-20 titles as they beat the Karachi Dolphins by 7 wickets in the final of the RBS National 20-20 Cup last night.

Shahid Afridi won the toss and elected to bat first but the Dolphins' batsmen struggled against the pace of Sarfaraz Ahmed (2-23) and the spin of Shoaib Malik (2-29).

Besides Fawad Alam, who scored 40 off 31 deliveries, none of the batsmen got going as the Dolphins' innings closed at 125-9 in 20 overs.

Khalid Latid (15 off 16), Naumanullah (14 off 19), Afridi (12 off 9), and Sarfraz Ahmed (16 off 10), all got starts but none of them could build on them.

The Stallions got off to a good start with Kamran Younis (31 off 37) and Mansoor Amjad (39 off 35) easily scoring off the Dolphins' bowling.

As soon as Afridi came on though, the tide turned as the Stallions' scoring rate dropped and they lost a few wickets, but 125 was never going to be enough.

Brothers Shoaib Malik (19*) and Adeel Malik sealed the game for the Stallions in the last over of the innings as Adeel smashed an unbeaten 23 off only 11 deliveries with the help of 2 sixes and a boundary.

This was the Stallions' 3rd victory in a row in the domestic 20-20 championship and they now join the champions and the runners up from the IPL, Australia, South Africa, and England in the inaugral 20-20 Champions League to be held in December.

Shoaib Malik, the Stallions' captain, was declared man of the match for his 2 wickets and unbeaten 19 at the end of the innings.

Salman Butt was declared the best batsman of the tournament - with 152 runs from 3 innings, he was the highest run scorer in the tournament.

Sohail Khan, who created domestic records with his bowling last season, got the best bowler award for his 6 wickets in 4 matches even though his Dolphins skipper, Shahid Afridi ended as the highest wicket taker in the tournament - 7 at an average of 11.28.

Afridi's Dolphins failed to win the title, ending as runners up for the 2nd time in a row and this win definitely puts Shoaib Malik ahead if him in the captaincy race.
